TDJL: Thanks for sitting with us at The DJ List today. Can you tell us about yourself and how you got into music?
EM: I guess you could say I was born into the music ... literally born into it. My mom worked at a night club up until 2 days before I was born and house music is all my family listens to. It's so hard to explain who I am, in a few words: Fun, Energetic, Friendly, Dancer, Kid, Dreamer, Believer.
TDJL: Who or what would you say is your biggest musical inspiration?
EM: I would say that TIESTO is my inspiration because the whole thing that started my career was seeing Tiesto at the Reliant Stadium when I was 9. Watching him perform and seeing how he connected with the crowd just amazed me. When the concert was over, I was in the car thinking to myself, "Wow, I want to be a DJ just like him." I told my mom, but she said when I'm older, but that didn't stop me from pursuing my dreams. I begged for 2 years until they finally broke down got me the equipment.
TDJL: You’re 14―when did you start DJing exactly?
EM: I started DJing the day after my 11th birthday.
TDJL: When did you decide that it was time to take it professionally?
EM: When I got the equipment I started to practice right away, and my dad found me a tutor so I could learn properly. His name is ALBERT FIX, and after about 5 months, Albert said “Okay, I'm done now," and my mom was like "Okay, see you next week?” But Albert said "No, I'm done done, she needs to start playing out...” My parents were shocked! They were so proud. That's when I realized that it was getting serious and that it was the beginning of my dream coming true.
TDJL: What kind of music do you play?
EM: I play Electro House and Progressive House, but when I'm opening for another DJ, I play more Deep House to bring the energy of the room down and to get the crowd prepared for the headliner.
TDJL: What have been some of your most exciting gigs so far?
EM: My 2 most exciting gigs so far were:
1. Paint Wars in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, because it was my first show out of town as the headliner and it was epic!
2. Euphoria Music Festival in Austin, Texas, because it was my first festival and I was on the main stage. I really hope they have me back next year.
TDJL: How is the dance music scene in Texas?
EM: I think House Music/EDM is really big in Houston right now. Everything from the underground scene with deep house to the trance scene is huge, plus with all the festivals coming in town, and with all of the big artists coming to town and playing to sold out shows, I think the dance music scene here is strong and growing.
TDJL: What are some of your goals as an artist?
EM: My top goal is to be #1 DJ in the world. This has been my goal since I first realized I wanted to do this for the rest of my life. Other goals are playing Tomorrowland in Belgium, working with different artists such as TYDI, STEVE AOKI, DIMITRI VEGAS & LIKE MIKE, HARDWELL, and ZEDD, and getting my first EP finished.
TDJL: What is one piece of advice that you would give to a young artist?
EM: Honestly, some of the best advice that I’ve been given, that I would share with others, is to stay focused on your goals, production is important, believe in yourself, follow your dreams and dream big! There's nothing wrong with being a dreamer, because sometimes dreams come true. With hard work, practice, and dedication, anything is possible.
TJDL: What is something that you are obsessed with right now?
EM: I'm currently obsessed with Summer by CALVIN HARRIS because it always makes me want to dance, and Latch by Disclosure because I really like the groove. I'm always obsessed with the music, it's my life. I fall asleep every night with my headphones on.
