The weather could not have been more perfect as trance fans descended on the Oakland Coliseum for ASOT 900, hosted in collaboration with INSOMNIAC and ALDA Events. All around, crowds donned their ARMADA-themed merch to spend the day enjoying the label’s stars live for the first time on the West Coast. For its 900th show tour, ARMIN VAN BUUREN released “Lifting You Higher”, a high energy track, as the anthem.
Fatum kicked off the event and opened with their single “The Game” and wasted no time dropping their massive collaboration with GENIX, JAYTECH and JUDAH, “All In”. They kept the energy up as more people trickled onto the floor of the Coliseum playing their remix of Armin’s “Wild Wild Son” and spin on Duran Duran classic “The Wolf”.
Up next was RUBEN DE RONDE and Rodj, who joined forces as TogetheRR. The duo played tracks off their self-titled project and also featured many tracks from de Ronde’s album Different, released a day prior on Armada. A personal favorite moment was hearing their mashup of de Ronde and ELEVVEN’s “Lucky Penny” and CAMELPHAT’s “Breathe” while the confetti danced in the air.
MaRLo started off with a bang and had everyone singing along to ”Lighter Than Air” and Umini’s bootleg of ABOVE & BEYOND classic “Thing Called Love”. With the sun setting he continued to drop remixes as well as a handful of IDs with heavier psy-trance beats. MARLO was a joy to watch because he constantly had a smile on his face and really engaged the crowd.
The Future Sound of Egypt swept over the Bay as ALY & FILA took the stage. Hits like ”Perfect Love” and ”Sands of Time” enveloped the crowd in the signature Aly & Fila sound. Last to play before Armin himself was NWYR (pronounced “new year”), W&W’s trance project. Their set was incredibly fun and included originals and songs from TIESTO, GARETH EMERY, Billie Eilish, and even the Avengers theme song.
Finally, it was time for Armin’s 2-hour set to close the night. The crowd roared as he stepped on stage and opened up with the anthemic “La Résistance De L'Amour”. The stage came alive with an array of lights and lasers that illuminated the now dark sky. The production lived up to everything we’ve come to love Insomniac and ALDA for, nothing short of breathtaking. Armin brought Luke Bond and KARRA on stage for their track ”Revolution”. Tracks from GAIA’s new Moons of Jupiter were played as well. The night ended with “Blah Blah Blah” as fireworks shot into the air. It’s always such an honor to watch a master of their craft perform.
Oakland was record-breaking as the largest event held by ASOT in the US. Attendees were left in awe of the production and incredible music from each artist. Relive the night now on ASOT’s YouTube Channel. The festival heads to Mexico City on September 21. Find out more information on the ASOT website.
