Following the release of singles “Dry The Rose” & “I Can’t Keep Up With You,” LA-based producer MIDOCA unveiled his full 'Dry The Rose' EP out now on MAU5TRAP. The five track EP is his most sonic work to date, which stems from deep introspection, the desire for change, and the appreciation of lessons brought on from one’s past.
The EP also features Midoca’s signature ambient sound as well as his own vocals, which allow for the full expression of his raw emotion and sincerity. “Behind the Glass” introduces listeners to the EP with a crescendoing instrumental, interrupted with static-like noises, that build to a full-bodied melody. As the song fades, you hear his voice speak.
“For so long, I made an identity out of the things in my life that I didn’t know how to change, I just became them. I felt like I was watching myself exist in a room but from behind the glass, like I was simply not there. I feel different now; better. I’m learning to let go and see the beauty of the things in the past.”
The title track “Dry The Rose” is stifled in pain over a lost relationship. After losing an important relationship, Midoca began his pursuit of understanding his personal shortcomings, and ‘Dry The Rose’ is his mellifluous tale of just that.
“I’ve spent a few years now in therapy learning about myself and what led me to having the perspective I had of myself and what I was deserving of,” he said in a press release.
Next is an ode to breaking the chains of mistreatment in “I Can’t Keep Up,” whose lyrics sing of an impossible chase and falling behind, or “falling without knowing which way is up.” He sings of letting go and prioritizing his own self-worth. These revelational lyrics are paired with nostalgia-soaked synths and blissful guitar.
“‘I Can’t Keep Up With You’ was written after realizing I was being taken advantage of by someone in a higher position of power,” said Midoca. “I was angry and disappointed, but the separation was freeing. The uplifting energy from the songs production came from that feeling of levity.”
Two previously unreleased tracks, “Something More Than This” and “Thank You’ follow. The former has him working through finding his own strength, backed by electric guitar and moving percussion. The latter is a hopeful realization that brighter days have come.
‘Dry The Rose’ symbolizes Midoca’s search for vulnerability and understanding, and personal promise of letting go and learning. Inspired by love, love lost, and ultimate understanding, Midoca’s story is rooted in growth from start to finish. Written in moments of self-awareness, Dry The Rose is a soundtrack for change, and the pursuit of becoming oneself.
“The last body of work I created ‘Beautiful Story, Ugly Life’ was about my experience, understanding, and capacity for love after having been raised by an addict; the way that shifted how I much trusted and how much of others I let in, said Midoca. “‘Dry The Rose’ is a hopeful farewell to certain learned behaviors and ideas I had of myself.”
