We're privileged to have Dutch producer Steve Cherry chat to us this week. He has recently dropped a fantastic single titled "Your Eyes," and clearly brings plenty of influences into his work. Read below to hear more from the artist himself.
Good to have you! Please tell us a little about yourself… who are you and where are you currently based?
My name is Steve, aka Steve Cherry. I am currently based in the Netherlands in the city of Tilburg. I also study here at the Rock Academy where I learn Electronic Music Production.
How long have you been making music? What made you first want to get into it as a career?
I have been making music since I was 12 and I am 23 now so that is about 11 years. I started taking guitar lessons and around the same time, I downloaded FL Studio on my PC. I was in love with it! The first few years I was just playing around and getting to know the program. When it was time for me to make a decision in my career, I chose for music because I was already making music every day.
Do your surroundings inspire your music? How would you sum up the signature Steve Cherry sound?
I figured that I really need to challenge myself to keep me inspired. I am not triggered that easily. I live with three other producers here in Tilburg, which helps a lot; we inspire and stimulate each other. Other music that gives me the chills mainly inspires me. That can be every kind of music. To me music is almost like meditation, it keeps me in a trance. If I would describe my own sound I would say it is a good balance between electronic an acoustic sounds. Also very energetic and raw sounding, especially the synth sounds. My friends tell me that my sound design is very advanced and that I have a good ear and feel on when to go all out or stay quiet and let the track ‘’breath."
Are you pleased with how your new single with Mileaux has turned out?
Yes, very much! Both tracks actually, "Taking Over" and "Your Eyes"!
"Your Eyes" was an old project that I had laying around for a while. At first, I only had the drop and a bit of a build-up. When we started working on it in one of our classes everything fell in to place very naturally.
What do you enjoy most about collaborating on the track and how did it happen?
Well, I think the process and the fact that we already were good friends. The first day we started, we wrote all the lyrics (also for "Taking Over"). We both did not put our ego in the way. We listened to each other’s ideas and if we had something nice, we built on that without holding on to tight at one idea. In my experience that can lead to tunnel vision and you can be really stuck at some point. We were both very hyped about it!
All-time favorite dance music release?
Haha, I hate questions like these, to be honest. There is so much great music out there and it really depends on the mood I am in. However, today I think I would say the AWAY remix of ILLENIUM – "Leaving."
Where do you see your sound progressing over the coming months/years?
I hope to expand my own sound, so if people hear it they know it comes from me. I wish that people get to know my music and enjoy what I make, maybe in a way which can help them as well.
If you could work with any artist (alive or dead) on a track, who would you choose and why?
Again, hard question. I think I would say Virtual Riot. I think he really is a genius!
What can we expect from you next?
A lot more music and not only commercial tracks! I am also working on a live show with original music and visuals. Once that is done, I want to bring it to you as soon as possible.
