As the USA's dance music scene continues to come of age on a widespread scale and different styles proliferate and evolve, new talents are coming thick and fast. Only a few have the staying power to go the distance, however. Formerly known as Nick Terranova, US talent STARKILLERS has been cutting a swathe through the bolshier end of the global house music scene over the last few years with his tough-edged, eclectic sound. Blending big hooks and riffs, soaring vocals, thumping beats and mind-bending effects trickery, his sound is the perfect blend of high-octane, fierce energy and accessible appeal. It's truly at home amidst the contemporary sound of cutting-edge dance music. We got a chance to catch up with him to get the latest buzz!
How did you get into dance music?
I started Starkillers around 2007. Before that, I used to work on TV commercials, I was the voice of Hot Wheels...remember the toy cars? I used to work on all kinds of music for TV like that, that really got me into producing but then I went to Holland and lived there for a few years learning all about dance music. I've always been into music, buying vinyl online - so I had copies of tracks before my local record shop had them.
Who or what would you say is your biggest musical influence?
There have been so many people that have influenced me over the years, so many great tracks and labels it's a really hard question to answer. I get inspiration from everything and everyone around me, my fans influence me to work harder and keep growing and my music partner DMITRY KO is a influence on me with the music. We work together on lots of projects.
Describe to us your sound.
Big, in your face, crazy electro house!!
My latest release is actually forthcoming on Dim Mak Records, I can't say much about it. The "Unexpected" record was actually a remix I did a few years ago.
Can you tell us a bit about your upcoming records?
I have a collaboration with INPETTO coming soon and a new record with TONY JUNIOR from Spinnin Records. I have another single with NADIA ALI too. I've been doing remixes too for ARMIN VAN BUUREN, NERVO, AKON, HADOUKEN and loads more. So loads of great music to come soon!
Talk to us about Killer Radio.
Killer Radio is my weekly radio show, we syndicate to over 15 countries around the world, you can download the show every Friday from iTunes. All you need to do is subscribe. We bring in guests every week to deliver a 30 minute guest mix. We have had DJs such as Armin van Buuren, GARETH EMERY, SANDER VAN DOORN, JOHN DAHLBACK and more. We also like to give opportunities to smaller DJs that are trying to break to feature on the show. It's a great way every week of showcasing my music and music of new talent.
If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?
Sander van Doorn. I like the way he plays and how he plays live. It would be great to do a track with him.
What has been your most memorable gig so far this year?
Ministry of Sound in London, it was such an honor for me to play such a prolific club. The crowd was insane. I played with SHOWTEK - those guys were crazy. I also played this festival in Grand Rapids, Michigan - that was very memorable.
What has been your most embarrassing moment in your career?
Not sure, maybe when the power went out on my laptop and the music stopped at one gig. That was pretty scary. It's okay as we fixed it pretty quick.
Anything you'd like to say to your fans?
I love my fans, thank you for all your support!
