One of our absolute favourite labels ever & major musical influence of Theo Parrish is coming to Europe for Family Reunion with a stellar line up for two exclusive shows, celebrating 50 years of timeless music.
Black Jazz Records was founded in Oakland, California back in 1969 by jazz pianist Gene Russell as an alternative to traditional forms of jazz – including funk, free jazz and soul. This invoked a new and fresh alternative that embodied the spirit of the black/urban awakening of the civil rights period. The label existed for a short period until Russell’s passing in 1981. During that time, the label boasted a heavyweight roster of superior instrumentalists and vocalists such as Jean Carn, Kellee Paterson, Doug Carn, Henry Franklin, Rudolph Johnson, Calvin Keys or The Awakening to name but a few.
Doug & Jean Carn’s releases remain fan favourites amongst Djs, producers & record collectors worldwide and are widely considered spiritual jazz Anthems. In 1974 even Billboard Magazine noted that the duo outsold both Dave Brubeck and Ramsey Lewis. In later years Jean Carn would go on to become a successful R&B artist on the Philadelphia International Record label. The label’s music also became popular through samples used by hip-hop artists such as Ice Cube or A Tribe Called Quest with Henry Franklin’s & Calvin Keys’ essential albums being the most sampled ones alongside Doug Carn’s four albums for the label.
In its short life, Black Jazz Records managed to capture not just the sound of a political movement but the heartbeat of the times and people as well.
