Grammy nominated Kiwi producer, songwriter, broadcaster and DJ Zane Lowe has always stood at the forefront of music and culture, making artist discovery and intimate interviews his trademark. Now at the helm of Apple Music’s Beats 1 radio, and recently named number one ‘Gatekeeper’ by Billboard Magazine in their 2016 Power List, Zane is elevating the art of broadcasting in the age of the cloud.
Broadcasting to over 100 countries around the world, Beats 1 led by Lowe, boasts the world’s best DJs and biggest artists hosting exclusive interviews and playing incredible music. It’s loud. It’s unapologetic. It’s alive. It’s always on. Some of this years most notable moments in music happened with Zane on Beats 1; launching Drake’s album VIEWS which smashed all previous streaming records, and for which Zane had the only interview and hosted a global listening party, Taylor Swift’s extensive filmed interview wrapping up The 1989 Tour, Adele’s first long form filmed interview for her record breaking album ‘25’ and Chance The Rapper’s exclusively premiered mix tape Coloring Book. Beats 1 also boasts original shows from global chart-toppers like Diplo, Ellie Goulding and Pharrell to iconic superstars Mary J. Blige, Elton John and Dr Dre. Zane is widely considered music’s most trusted curator whose taste and influence can’t be defined by one genre alone and this is reflected across Beats 1 as it explores and exposes the best music from around the world.
Born in New Zealand, Zane got his break at Auckland music station MAX TV in the mid-nineties. After moving to London in 1997 he appeared on MTV’s Up For It Live, going on to host permanent show, ‘Gonzo’, which quickly gained cult status with unedited, candid conversations about music and superstar guests such as Paul McCartney, REM and the Foo Fighters.
Lowe started his radio career hosting XFM’s Music Response in London before moving to BBC Radio 1’s Flagship slot in 2002, showcasing the hottest new music from around the world. The Zane Lowe Show would eventually become the most important new music show in the UK, introducing exciting new music to the world – including, amongst others, Arctic Monkeys, Adele, The Killers and Ed Sheeran. By 2014 the name Zane Lowe was synonymous with music broadcasting. His series of exclusive long-play interviews with Jay Z, Eminem, Kanye West, Chris Martin and Rick Rubin made headlines around the world. Zane won Specialist Music Programme at the Sony Radio Awards multiple times and took home Gold for Music Broadcaster of The Year an unprecedented 4 times. Zane won the NME Award for Radio 6 consecutive times (it would be nicknamed the Zane Lowe Award and has not been awarded to anyone since 2008). Zane was also awarded ‘Industry Champion’ at the Artist Manager Awards in 2012.
As a DJ Zane has consistently taken top billing at the world’s biggest clubs and festivals, including, amongst many others, Coachella, Future Music Festival and Glastonbury. He has also toured the world with artists such as Skrillex, The Prodigy and The Weekend. This year he performed at The Oscars for Vanity Fair, The Grammy’s and The Met Gala with Mark Ronson and Lady Gaga.
Zane is also a prolific songwriter and producer for a slew of chart topping artists and was recently nominated for a Grammy for his writing and production on Sam Smith’s 4 x Grammy winning debut album ‘In The Lonely Hour’.
