Vosper have fashioned an abrasively modern dynamic from the modes and mores of the past. The duo is about the marriage of propulsive Teutonic beats to the melodic impulse of the Sheffieldian sound: muscular industrial-strength rhythm finding expression in companionship to the pensive and wistful despondency of memory. With influences culled from the fertile ground of Dark Wave and EBM, but firmly positioned at the forefront of Techno, Vosper show a relentless enthusiasm for developing a singular musical voice, nourished on a shared past, that guarantees the listener glimpses of the formation of a new sonic sensibility.
Formed by Montreal-based Edouard Le and Christopher Byron, the duo utilizes their own rich backgrounds to craft melancholic compositions in an analog mode for a digital age. Though both Le and Byron had previously collaborated, it wasn’t until the formation of Vosper that the intangible qualities of their own musical ethos truly coalesced into an unique sonic world. With less than few months of existence, this duo has already toured in cities like Paris, Geneva and Berlin and played festivals like Igloofest, Mapping and Osheaga.
Their highly-anticipated debut Release EP on Parisian label Meant Records marks a great head start, and includes remixes from Playhouse/Output REWORK and Brussels-based up-and-comers POLAR (DC Salas and Thomas Sari). The EP received loads of stellar feedback from DJs and producers across the scene. Chloé (KillTheDJ) and The Hacker (Zone) both charted Vosper’s EP in Tsugi Magazine and Matt Walsh (Turbo/CloudedVision) was quick with praise, calling it “the biggest EP of the year so far, the best MEANT (release) so far,” and his “favourite new techno act.”
Further support and encouragement comes from the architects and chroniclers of the contemporary house and techno music scenes, including The Hacker, Slam, Ivan Smagghe, Cosmo Vitelli, Electric Rescue, Daniel Avery/Stopmakingme, Krikor, Pan/Tone (SidLeRock), Nhar, Bozzwell, Carreno is LB, The Countach, Monoblok & Pslktr, MlleCaro, Marc Piñol, JD Twitch and People Get Real.
Such effusive reviews and support are not earned easily nor taken lightly, and the “Release EP” is a fine opening salvo for Vosper. With an upcoming EP coming out on NYC’s Throne Of Blood (in collaboration with Bozzwell), a second EP for Meant Records and remixes on several labels, the following year shows good promise for Vosper.
