The house that dj Vanniety Kills built has become a fixture on D.C.’s DJ circuit. She’s become notorious for her house parties, daytime dances, and just about everything else in between. Professional by day, turntable manipulator by night, Vanniety Kills has an ear for music, creating DJ booth concoctions that sound like they were born that way. But it’s her ability to read a crowd that’s elevated her from good to great. Whether it’s her Ladies of the Underground showcase; OverEasy, her summer tea dance for the queer girl community; or Cadence, a monthly drum and bass showcase; she dabbles in a little bit of everything that makes hips shake. And just as she’s avoided musical niches, she’s also managed to not be pigeonholed as a selector for just queer events. She’s more about zig-zagging between scenes and uniting them on the dance floor.
