At the age of 28, Filip Nikolic’s a.k.a. Turbotito’s involvement in professional music already spans over a decade and encompasses an enormous range of projects and genres.
He first entered the music industry at the age of 18 as the guitarist for the Danish band Ludo X. The band’s rapid ascent from virtual unknowns to successful, charting artists was sparked off when they won the prestigious Danish Rock Championship in 1994. The ensuing media attention secured Filip and the band appearances at all major Danish festivals in 1994, as well as shows in virtually every sizeable venue in the country. Ludo X were also invited to join The Cardigans on their Scandinavian tour in the fall of 1996, as well as touring extensively in Sweden, Denmark and Japan.
The recorded output of the band gained critical acclaim in their native Denmark and performed well in other territories. Their first single, released in 1995, stayed in the Top 30 for a number of weeks, and all subsequent releases (mixed by the now-legendary Tore Johansson) also garnered copious radio airplay and press coverage.
Ludo X parted ways in early 1997 due to growing creative differences. He joined the up-and-coming Junior Senior in 2002, covering lead guitar duties until 2003, when he also started to play bass in the band. As part of Junior Senior, Filip performed at numerous high-profile events, including Roskilde Festival, Denmark (2003), SummerSonic Festival, Japan (2004), Reading and Leeds Festivals, UK (2003) and Glastonbury Festival (2003). The band also completed a two-week UK tour in 2003, as well as touring the US with Electric 6 and Ima Robot in 2004.
Promotional work with Junor Senior also included TV appearances, and Filip has performed on a wide variety of national programs. These include The Sharon Osbourne Show, The Tom Green Show and Jay Leno in the US. British performances include Jools Holland, as well as four separate appearances on the esteemed Top Of The Pops show in support of the Top 5 single “Move Your Feet”. Filip was also awarded a Gold record for his performance on the same track. Moreover, he performs in all of the band’s subsequent video releases- “Shake Your Coconuts”, “Rhythm Bandits” and “Boy Meets Girl”.
Filip is also a founding member of the ground-breaking dub-reggae act Djosos Krost, who performed at Roskilde Festival 2005 and whose recent debut release “No Sign Of Bad” has been met with universal critical acclaim. Filip has production credits on the album, as well as having performed the vast majority of the instrumentals on the recording. “No Sign Of Bad” has just been licensed for worldwide release by the highly regarded electronica label “Music For Dreams”.
Filip is now a full-time member of Los Angeles band and Virgin Records artists Ima Robot. The band toured as the opening act for Duran Duran in the US and Canada for two weeks in 2005, and are currently working on their sophomore album at Capitol Studios in Los Angeles.
Solo projects include prolific techno production under the pseudonym Electrica, which he toured independently in Denmark for a year in 1997. Despite having been offered three major-label deals, the project is currently on the backburner. Filip also has vast experience as both a DJ and a producer, and has remixed international artists such as Junior Senior, Money Your Love, Har Mar Superstar and Lake Placid under the Turbotito moniker. He Djs regularly in Los Angeles, New York City, San Francisco and Europe especially Copenhagen where he has been the resident DJ at several big clubs.
