A fan of music from an early age, DJ Smark was born in Toronto and moved to the US when he was very young. In the summer of 2005 he took his first plunge into DJing… the rest is now history. At first using just a computer and headphones, DJ Smark started out at local and college parties where he learned to work crowds into a frenzy while undercutting the entire Boston DJ market to gain amazing exposure with such little experience. He touched turntables for the first time in January 2006, where in addition to his local party gigs he tried a few radio DJ stints for WMBR 88.1 FM. At the same time he began working as a local club promoter in Boston to lay the seeds for what would be a successful club DJ entrance in 2007 into Boston’s reputable club scene.
In the summer of 2006 while living in Paris, France, DJ Smark managed to secure a special DJ appearance at a Paris lounge, La Taverne de Nesle. His European debut was so successful that his beats were pumped throughout both floors of the establishment for much of the night, and helped him secure several smaller gigs in Paris during his time abroad. It was during these months in Europe that his passion for house and dance music flourished. Upon his return to the US in August, DJ Smark finally began training on his own new tables. With the exception of a few lessons in the early months of 2006, nearly all of his talent on tables to this day is self taught, partially as a result of the timeless hours spent in the fall of 2006, and partially as a result of the talent hidden for so long in his musical soul.
Starting in August 2006, DJ Smark secured some of the largest events of his pre-club career. After DJing 10 large-scale college events in a period of 12 days at the end of August and early September, his notoriety spread throughout Boston. By winter of 2006 he had entered into discussions to begin his club career. January 2007 saw the transformation of DJ Smark from the college party world onto the renowned Boston club stage, opening at Shine Lounge in Cambridge for NYC DJ Gaurav. He followed this performance with his debut at one of Boston’s most notorious nightclubs, Rumor. Following these two debut performances, DJ Smark was featured opening and headlining at venues such as Mantra, Vinalia, Aria, & Lounge 33. On the eve of his relocation to NYC, DJ Smark kicked off what became one of Boston’s hottest summer night-spots, 711 Fridays @ 7one1 Boston.
New York proved to be a true turning point in DJ Smark’s career. Winter 2007 saw the launch of his successful NYC Unwound mix series, as well as his first ever New Year’s club performance with DJ SynCity (Playboy Mansion / BET / MTV) at 7one1 Boston, and 2008 featured several debut performances in NYC. These included performances at Le Souk opening for DJ Patricia Masino (WMC 2008 & 2009), at Guesthouse opening for DJ Mark King (WMC 2009), and at Glass Lounge (with Patricia Masino, Frank Knight, and more). He continued to expand his presence in NYC, opening at the renowned Moomia Lounge, as well as landing his first headliner events in Queens at Prohibition Lounge, and in Manhattan at Boucarou. Also in 2009, NYC Unwound culminated into the creation of his NYC
Unwound Radio show, as a resident DJ on Miamibeatz Internet Radio. He also established his first club and bar DJ residencies in CT at Lush, Hot Shots, and Streets, as well as visiting residencies with DJ Just’n in Raleigh, NC at Ess Lounge and Cashmere. Following his residency with Miamibeatz, DJ Smark started a regular release of his Unwound Radio mix-set series.
DJ Smark relocated to D.C. in 2013, and is starting to make his mark on D.C. with established residencies in Maryland, Virginia, and Washington DC!
Globally he continues to expand his network to places such as Miami, Toronto, Seattle, Dublin, and even Sao Paulo (where he has an open invite to DJ during his next visit). He is also beginning to delve into his own track, remix, & beat production. Several new sets of Unwound Radio are on the way… Stay tuned here for his next releases and future appearances!
