Breaks, Progressive House

Since moving to LA in 6/03, life couldn’t be more wonderful for this rising star! She has been auditioning for various shows for MTV, Spike TV and other networks thanks to the agency. After being the only DJ outside of California asked to go to MTV in NY to audition, she became one of only three finalists to be screen tested for the “Wade Robson Project” which aired on MTV. She has already been on four callbacks for a new show on Spike TV. In Jan 04, she was the official Numark DJ for the annual “NAMM Show” in Anaheim CA, and was featured on the Mackie website. Kelly’s film career has also just begun! “OC CORE” and “4:20 DUMMIES” is a two-part movie that is shooting in Orange County, CA, and will be distributed on DVD. “OC CORE” is a compilation of music videos for OC’s top bands who’s music will be featured in the movie “4:20 DUMMIES”. Her own video will also be incorporated into the film, and she will be written into the script. You can also see her in the footage of some of the other band’s videos as well. Shugga was the only DJ to be featured in “OC CORE”. In a poll given by Skoolfish Productions in the U.K in 2001, she was voted 2nd sexiest person in breaks making her #1 in the US, and #2 in the world.

Kelly is also embarking on a serious career in the music business. While on this venture, and with the help of someone very special, and extremely high up (whom that she is very lucky and thankful to know – thank you), she was able to invite, and delivered, SONY reps to see a live act in the hopes of sparking an interest from the label. Also, a band called lifeline has invited her to join them on tour in between her own tour dates to places like Mexico, Hong Kong, and all over the US. A band called Roundeye has captured Kelly’s attention and she will help manage them.

For a little more background on Shugg’s, she has been involved with music all her life. Prior to DJing, she was a dancer so beats, rhythm and movement have been embedded in her since she could walk. She started DJing in 97 after she had already been collecting music for some time. She was asked to join the very first “Caffeine Culture Spring Breaks Tour 2000” that traveled all over Florida, North and South Carolina, Louisiana, and Tennessee. The tour lasted for four months and featured Dave Trance, Huda Hudia, Stew, and Shugga. This opened many doors for Kelly and she was invited back to many of the places that she was featured. She has held many residencies in Connecticut at Ego, Insomnia, Match, Bleu, and Grand, and has played at New York City’s many bars and clubs. She plays a variety of music from house to down tempo, UK breaks, drum and bass and electro. Working at Satellite Records in New York for about three years has exposed her to all aspects of music. Funk Dawg Records represented Kelly as an artist when they started their label in 2000. They released records and cd’s of original music and went on tour. Her first release on Funk Dawg Records was called “Shugga, Sugar”. “Bitch Slap”, a Groovy electro Funky-break featuring vocals from Shugga, and produced alongside of Mike Robinson, was completed for her performance at the Annual Winter Music Conference in Miami 2002. She has also been working with Scott Pentila (neosoul) and Oscure (LABA). She continues to build her career as she develops her production skills. A new album of original music is in the works.
