Having had an interest in music from a young age, Rick “the plant” Laplante has been collecting and playing electronic dance music records since 1992, and began accepting DJ gigs at parties and in EDM clubs as the years unfolded.
Over the years, Rick has built a collection of classic or little known (and sometimes quirky) vinyl that will make you bop your head and move your feet. He has very eclectic tastes in music, and can step up to the decks to throw down a solid set of house music in almost any incarnation… from funk to jazz, to Latin vibe, to his favorite: deep and funky tech-house.
Just as Rick’s musical tastes vary, so do the sounds you hear in his genre-bending sets. Growing up listening to many different styles of music, and studying guitar, keyboard, and playing trumpet in a jazz band for years, has made Rick’s influences broad and diverse.
Rick first began DJ’ing in London, ON, Canada in the early 90’s as a sort of Sidekick to Definitive Records’ Dave Yates. In 1994, Yates, along with Capital J and Rick Laplante, were the resident DJ’s of London’s first and longest running weekly electronic music club night, “Further”. From there, Rick and a partner started up a promotions company, Prism Productions, which saw several successful events realised in London in the years of 1994 – 1995.
Highlights from the period of ‘92 – ’98 include opening at “Further” for John Acquaviva, as well as playing at parties with top talent like Richie Hawtin and Jeff Milligan (aka Algorithm), and Eric Downer, Nitin Kalyan, Jarrko, Ian Guthrie, Dominik, Capital J, Jeremy P. Caulfield (aka Lotus), and many other talented Canadian DJ’s.
Rick moved from London to Ottawa in 1998, and it’s the city in which he currently resides. Since re-locating to the Nation’s Capital, Rick has played in practically every club that has featured house music in the city during this time period: Heaven, Atomic, Helsinki, Surface, The Well, Buddah Bar, Bar 56, Collection, MTL & Co., Rouge, Lotus Lounge Caf Dekcuf and Mavericks. Rick has also played several DJ sets in Sudbury, Oshawa, and Toronto, but weekly promotions work generally keeps him close to home.
In Ottawa Rick has played played parties with DJs such as Jeff Milligan, John Creamer, Luke Morrison, Addy, Max Hebert, Eddy Jasmin, Jubin, Lafleche, DJ Mad, Creator, The Dukes, Mat Ste-Marie, Guthrie and Eric Downer and, of course, the many talented local Ottawa DJs.
Rick is currently a resident DJ and the Promoter of Ottawa’s premiere weekly EDM after-party: Sundaze Afterhours & Day Lounge (every Sunday from 3am – 3pm+ in Ottawa, Ontario @ Mavericks – 221 Rideau Street).
Rick has also studied Applied Audio Recording, with aspirations of producing original music in the coming year… when he can find the time amidst event promotions and DJ’ing!
