Popgirl 23

United States

Jen “popgirl” 23’s background starts as a young b-girl listening to early hip-hop, Freestyle Latin, pop & classic rock during the 80’s; later as a raver and clubber during the 90’s. In 1996 she asked her best friend Roger (Jackmaster Flash) to show her how to mix. By 2001, she was a sought after dj-in-demand.

“…her tastes run from deep soulful house to electro, with an aesthetic where breaks meets Body and Soul…” (- 2001, Vapor club flyer, Boston)

Jen’s funky tribal and deep house mixes are packed full of tasty selections spanning the past 20 or more years of electronic dance music history. Her sets can range from deep n’ moody to straight up jackin’ beats while crafting some funky-ass bass-driven grooves. It’s all done on the fly (no set lists), with a “crazy-pitch” style of handling the decks, and constant mixer action including cuts, juggles, and harmonized extended mixes. The result is a positive, danceable, sexy, and sophisticated mix… with no silly gimmicks.

To date (fall’05) Jen’s held many residencies in her hometown, winning PORTLAND’S BEST CLUB DJ 2003 title, and runner’s-up for both 2002 and 2004. She just successfully concluded a 4 year Saturday night residency at Una Wine Bar, Portland’s top lounge, featuring New England’s best deep house and nu-jazz grooves with guest DJ’s from all around the region & beyond …and putting Portland on the map as a cool place to play.

Her taste & skills have taken her to almost every city in New England, plus New York City, San Diego, San Francisco, and overseas to Italy & The UK.

Last summer, Jen was recognized by the Portland Phoenix as one of PORTLAND’S MOST INFLUENTIAL WOMEN 2004 for quote: “breaking into the boys club”… meaning = 13-plus years of dedication to Portland’s nightlife… as DJ, but also as promoter putting on shows in bars and nightclubs as well as more underground “venues”. Of particular note is the fact that this list is populated with lawyers, city officials, and community activists and to be associated with such is a bit of an honor. She’s particularly proud of being recognized as the first ever female to be a guest DJ on the Mediterranean island of Sardinia in august of 2004… and totally tearing down the house with an unforgettable funky house set!

Today, you can find her hosting her show “Galanta’s Old Fashioned House Jam” & spinning at Bubba’s Sulky Lounge in Portland (Voted #1 place to dance in Portland 3 years in a row), as well as around the region wherever she’s asked to play.

In short, her sound is distinct and her mixes are smooth as silk. Best of all though is that she’s coming from the dancefloor perspective. Her sets simply make you want to dance.
