DJ Piolo: From the drum line to the wheels of steel
Luis Soberanis, aka DJ Piolo, was born in Merida, Yucatan, México. Always a passionate music aficionado, he started making beats as leader of the drum line in his junior high years. That ongoing drumbeat took him to the turntables of a recording studio where he started to mix and remix music, creating unique sounds that from the beginning set him apart from other disc jockeys in Mexico.
His contagious enthusiasm and properly executed mixes caught the eyes and ears of dance music connoisseurs and producers, and thus DJ Piolo became the star disc jockey at various beach and urban clubs since 1988.
He started building a reputation in the Mexican south thanks to his innovative and avant-garde music. As a perennial promoter of dance genres, in the mid 90’s DJ Piolo jumped to the international scene attending and participating in festivals and parties in Miami, New York and Las Vegas. There, he established connections with colleagues and producers of world electronica, and he was applying his new found knowledge to the mixes he played every night at clubs in north Mexico, always welcomed by the demanding audience.
Throughout the years, DJ Piolo was able to create a new channel for broadcasting his passion for music, and thus he created Greenlight Records in Monterrey: the first Mexican store devoted to audio equipment, disc jockey accessories, and a huge catalog of music in imported vinyl. The store’s most requested genres include house, trance, tech-house, progressive and tribal. Obviously, this constant connection to new music in the store is a factor motivating DJ Piolo to feature in his sets the latest and best rhythms, always with his well known personal touch.
DJ Piolo has shared stages with artists like David Guetta, Tiesto, Paul Van Dyk, David Morales, Erick Morillo, Paul Oakenfold, Steve Aoki, Calvin Harris, among others, and he is undoubtedly a major character in the Mexican electronic scene.
