DJ Phistmi was born in Miami, Florida in 1979. While traveling to different parts of the world throughout his lifetime, he maintained his residency in Miami. Today, DJ Phistmi reminisces about his discovery of becoming an audiophile, especially during the movement of “bass” in the mid 80’s. He says that as far as he can remember, he listened to hip-hop on the radio when he was 11 years old and had no idea of what artist playing on the radio. He thinks it was more an act of rebellion than a love for music. He also claims that shortly after, his interest in “rock” grew because of some friends at school and remembers “And Justice For All…” by Metallica being one of his favorite full-length albums. Over the next few years, he listened mostly to rock bands like Guns ‘n’ roses, the Smashing Pumpkins, Gwar, etc., until ‘98. All these changes in music preferences reflected DJ Phistmi’s revolutionary style.
After spending some time listening to different styles of rock music, DJ Phistmi became anxious to join a local band. Without any experience the task would be difficult, so the only guarantee he had was persistence. Hardly missing any practice sessions for Zeno, DJ Phistmi started logging in hours of hands-on experience acting as the band’s audio mixer and percussionist under the tutelage of a Jazz percussionist. Practicing sessions with covers of such artists as Tool and Dream Theater, DJ Phistmi had to learn under fire and finance his equipment. After some time, the band welcomed him as part of the ensemble, playing gigs in establishments such as Churchill’s, Tobacco Road, the Chili Pepper, and Kafe Krystals to name a few. In his spare time, DJ Phistmi practiced mixing religiously as a creative outlet while rehearsing with the band continuously. After some time, the band was broken up due to unforeseen circumstances and DJ Phistmi was able to use this time to hone his personal music styles.
Shortly after, DJ Phistmi then decided to take some music theory and sound engineering classes at Miami-Dade Community College (M.D.C.C.) to compliment his experience as a musician. While this process occurred, DJ Phistmi met Henry Menendez, president of HNO Productions, during classes in M.D.C.C. Henry became interested in the knowledge gathered by DJ Phistmi and invited him to perform at the Toys4Tots 2002 event held at the Loft (now known as The Garden) in Miami Springs, Florida, as his first solo deejay appearance.
In the meantime, DJ Phistmi states, “I have specific goals set for myself, such as being able to spin any music, regardless of what genre it is and still be able to put together a powerful set. I want to dissect the music and find out what exactly makes it so powerful. I want to be able to beatmatch and EQ without even thinking about it. I want to do it all… and I eventually will!”
