Her releases on labels Unknown To The Unknown, Fool’s Gold, Balkan Vinyl, Fabric, Ministry of Sound, Warp (as vocalist) and her own imprint Heka Trax have secured widespread kudos and praise from the world’s most respected music outlets. The first half of 2019 will see Maya release on DEXT, DABJ, Neutralizer and Musar.
As a remixer she recently lent her unique sound to Django Django, Franz Ferdinand and Carpainter. She continues to set herself apart as an exciting artist who is grounded in techno and rave club culture but displays innovation and nous that has attracted such diverse and respected labels to her music. Maya recently also earned her first soundtrack composition credit for Rachel Maclean’s feature film ‘Make Me Up’.
As a DJ, Nightwave has played major clubs and festivals around the globe such as Sonar Barcelona & Tokyo, Bestival, Movement, Bangface, Electric Picnic, Notting Hill Carnival, Outlook, Isle of Wight, Exit etc and has shared stages with some of the biggest name in dance music. Maya’s 2017 Mixmag Lab was picked-up by Pitchfork, who proclaimed “Nightwave is as engaging a performer as you’ll find behind the decks. Whether working the mix or just vibing, her energy is infectious as she slices through styles like a hungry shark.” Her recent Resident Advisor podcast was once again chosen mix of the month by Pitchfork, as well as Crack Magazine. Those unable to attend her shows, can check out her DJ mixes on BBC Radio 1 and 1Xtra, Beats 1, The Fader, Dazed, NTS, Rinse FM, Triple J, Ninja Tune, I Heart Radio and Reprezent.
On Nightwave’s own tastemaker label Heka Trax, showcasing her passion for international, forward-thinking dance music, she’s released fresh music from artists all around the globe, including 3 EPs by the label-boss herself, one featuring Chicago legend DJ Deeon.
Nightwave is also a passionate advocate for gender equality in the music industry; regularly hosting production and DJ skills workshops for girls as young as eight. She also co-runs Producergirls, a free UK workshop for women and has lectured at the EU initiative in Brussels as well as India as a part of British Council’s Women In Electronic Music project. She has also participated on many music industry panels (WIRE, St Andrews University, CAMP, Resonate, Movement etc).
