It should come as no surprise that DJ Michelle Musial began her career in Chicago-the birthplace of house music and the same place that’s produced many of the industry’s biggest most envied DJs. “You can see Chicago in my bounce when I deejay,” she says. As a co-founder of “Sincere”, the first two-step UK garage night in Chicago, she ended up capturing the city in stride. After citywide acclaimed success, she eventually decided to move to San Francisco at the age of 25. Since relocating to the West Coast, she has stayed true to her Chi-Town roots while introducing local flavor, but it’s her original and innovative set lists that have quickly made her one of the Bay Area’s most in-demand female DJs.
“What’s different about my music is that I rock the best of all genres,” she explains. “I don’t limit myself, I choose music based on how the crowd reacts while combining classic house, breaks, progressive, indie, 80’s, rock, remixes of top 40 pop hits-if I like it, I’m going to find a way to play it.” There’s ample reason for her confidence: Michelle’s skills have been recognized on print in publications including Urb Magazine, 7×7 Magazine and The San Francisco Bay Guardian, as well as being featured on E! network’s Big Boutique. She’s manned the decks at book launches for both Cynthia Rowley and Patrick McMullan and deejayed for audiences that have included Kanye West, Common, Spike Lee, Ludacris, Bjork, Snoop Dogg, President Bill Clinton and Drew Barrymore. Vegas’s well-known DJ Scotty Boy declares that Musial is “Not just beauty, she’s got the Beat” and DJAM couldn’t help but resist in saying, “Michelle is a smooth honkey. She has paid her dues as a DJ and you can hear it in her flawless transitions.”
Musial and her record bag (which includes everything from Mylo to Kid Sister to Deep Dish to Booka to Shade to Daft Punk to The Killers to Timbaland to Robbie Rivera) can be found at SF’s W Hotel (where she’s been in residence since 2002), the posh Redwood Room, or giving back at Clothing Swap parties around town. Suzanne Agasi, of the highly acclaimed Clothing Swaps states, “DJ Michelle Musial is the one to watch. Her talent to spin reminds me how much I adore dancing to great music. My social calendar revolves around where she’ll be spinning. Because of her style and finesse, she is my chosen femme fatale DJ at my exclusive DIVA EVE events.”
With future plans to get into the studio to record an album that showcases her own distinct sound (one that blends her wide-ranging tastes for a result that’s entirely original) there’s no telling where Michelle will pop up next. One thing’s for certain: wherever she is, the party’s guaranteed to follow.
