In 1988, Casey had his first encounters with House music. A DJ (DJ K-Nee)was spinning it in the basement of an industrial club, and the seed was planted. The Chicago Acid House had him hooked on getting acid house remixes of his favorite industrial bands. He started spinning a 2-hour show featuring beatmixed club and industrial tracks for a college radio station in Boulder (1989) and landed his first club gigs soon after. While working there, Casey (then DJ Rave-C) began to email reviews into an underground magazine, Brand-X, run by Miss Moneypenny out of New York. She liked the writing and ideas, and added DJ Rave-C to the staff – posting reviews and Top 10 Lists.
Then the real DJ’ing began. In early 1991, he went to Japan and DJ’d raves and clubs for 9 months while going to college, and got his first-hand exposure to the early international rave scene and for events sponsored by young members of the Japanese Yakuza, and playing alongside groups like the Orb and Dee-lite.
After returning to the U.S. to finish college, he continued to DJ around the Western U.S. and Canada including events and clubs in Texas, California, Washington, Vancouver, Baltimore, DC, and Colorado – over 75 raves, and 100’s of club performances. He also helped launch the Colorado underground by producing 100 events to date as Mental 69, The Neural Network, The Messiah, Fantastic Hosts, Groove Squad, Aural Pleaser Industries, and Whirling Dervish Productions.
In the mid 90’s he assumed the identity of his first production company, and began spinning as DJ Mental 69.
All double entendres intended.
A purist – but only in that he seeks the finest timeless grooves from all genres – his sets often span several genres seamlessly. Of course, there are favorites. As a producer, Mental is drawn to creating feel-good funky vibes, and trippy atmospheres. Soundscapes are the 3-dimensional palette for the audio experience.
Current public appearances are significantly limited to include only a few club gigs, and a few special events per year, but produces several events a year through his productions companies The Fantastic Hosts and Whirling Dervish Productions.
