Mark J Beatport

Biography

Mark J began collecting records in 1991, inspired by the sounds of the UK hardcore/breakbeat scene. After several years it was inevitable he progressed to DJing, and in 1993 bought his first set of turntables. Between 1993 and 1996 Mark taught himself the art of mixing and playing sets, working crowds at house parties and local events for friends. After finishing college Mark went onto University. While studying at South Bank University, London he played a regular weekly Thursday club night at the student union and occasional played at the Ministry of Sound (UK) student nights. An opportunity came up to DJ for the University of North London at the famous Rocket club, London, playing a mix of musical styles on a monthly basis. After finishing University and starting full time work the DJing took a back seat while he settled into his career, but the collecting of vinyl continued.

In early 2003 with more time on his hands and a fresh love of all things dance music the time had come for Mark to dust of the turntables again and get mixing! The last year has seen him busy organizing and playing at many events. You will currently see him playing all styles of House Music at various events around London and the South of England. He also currently has a show on the internet’s Premier house radio station, SSRADIOuk.com, every other Sunday 20:00 till 21:00 GMT playing an eclectic mix of house, disco, boogie, reggae, funk, hip-hop, soul, jazz, balearic and Leftfield sounds. In late 2009 SSRADIO expanded and created 4 additional channels of music and live radio to compliment the already popular House channel. Mark has been building up awareness and creating the Lounge & Chill Channel playlists, and bringing in Guest DJ spots, as well as regulary mixing up a fine collection of chilled out vibes on The Medicine Lounge show, which airs every fortnight.

With more events and residencies lined up under the SSRADIOuk.com banner and Mark’s own House Party Soundsystem nights, the future is looking positive… and busy for Mark J!
