Lady Jay does more than just dj. Aside from her career as a motion graphics artists, she fills most of her free time with djaying, organizing events, and running the non-profit organization United Divas. Currently living in Jersey City, New Jersey, she has dj residencies in 2 different states – Junktion in Los Angeles and The Waterbug Hotel Spoken Word/Music night in Jersey City. She also earned a dj residency in the bassment of Konkrete Jungle in New York City, playing breaks, electro & 2-step during the summer of 2004.
Her love of diversity reflects her music selections which vary from breaks, electro and tech-house to downtempo and experimental music. Lady Jay was first inspired by electronic music while listening and trying to breakdance to her step-father’s records. She fell in love with the electro-funk beats of artists such as Herbie Hancock, Soul-2-Soul, and Afrika Bambaata & the Soul Sonic Force. When her family moved to Frankfurt, Germany in 1992, she discovered the European electronic music movement, exploring everything from German “Ardkore” to ambient trance. Within a year, she found herself addicted to the roaring breakbeats of jungle. After moving to Northern California in 1995, Lady Jay spent most of her weekends at San Francisco raves and warehouse parties.
Although she has dabbled in formal music studies, playing the violin & the guitar as a child, her focus on academics always seemed to interfere with practicing her instruments. Finally, after 8 years of listening to tweaks and bleeps and living in Los Angeles for 3 years, she moved in with a friend from college who had a pair of turntables and a mixer. The convenience was just the excuse she needed to start collecting vinyl. Slowly building up her collection of new releases, she started out playing at dinner parties held at her loft. She would mix together diverse sets that included not only her new records, but also favorites from her parent’s record collection of old 70’s and 80’s bands, as well as early breaks and 80’s electro. Soon friends were requesting that she play at their barbeques and art openings.
Within 6 months, she began playing drum & bass at clubs and bars around Los Angeles. In September of 2001, she decided to take a short break to focus on her design career, but she continued to collect vinyl, expanding her collection to include breaks and several other styles of music. After a 6 month retreat, she stepped back up to the decks in March of 2002, mainly playing funky nu-skool breaks. Now, she plays all types of music, combining multiple genres in one set. She focuses on playing with music that creates the right mood and energy for each event.
Always on the go, Lady Jay hopes to share her music selection with dancers and aural enthusiasts in many cities, towns, and countries. Stay tuned for future collaborations with other artists in sound and sight as she spreads diversity to future events she participates in and supports.
