Biography

Kate Louise Smith is fast becoming one of the most in-demand songwriter vocalists in the UK. Her childhood obsession with the songwriters of the 60s & 70s (artists such as Joni Mitchell, Nick Drake & John Martyn), resulted in an intuitive ear for melody, hooks and vocal lines which are clearly recognised in the songs she writes today.

Kate is best known for the vocals, strong melodic songs and emotive lyrics she provides to the elite of the electronic / dance & trance music scene. Kate also turns her song writing hand to a wide spectrum of other musical genres. Her voice and songs simply ignite emotion in those that hear her them, whether it be a trance tune or a delicate acoustic folk song.

‘’I just love good music, irrespective of whether it’s found within Rock, Pop, Folk, Country or Dance. Any song that has a strong melody and great lyrics will reach out to me. I don’t believe a production style alone can interrupt the writing – a great song is a great song! I get the same sense of elation from listening to ‘Wild Horses’ by Ray Lamontagne as I would from Imogen Heap’s ‘Hide & Seek’ or Robert Miles ‘Children’. As a songwriter, I realised early on that I didn’t want to be tied to writing and singing within just one genre and I found that the world of dance music has such a wide range of musical influences that I was truly able to explore the boundaries of my singing voice as well as my ability to write songs, not just for myself to sing but also for other vocalists to perform.’’ – Kate Louise Smith – Music Week Magazine.

In 2005, writing and performing under the name ‘Kate Smith’, Kate signed to Notting Hill Music Publishing, home to artists such as Robbie Williams & Dizzee Rascall. During her time with Notting Hill she wrote for a host of artists across all genres but had the most commercial success with the track she penned and vocalled for The Soulseekerz. ‘Party For The Weekend’ (released on EMI’s Positiva imprint) made it to the Number 1 position in the UK Club Charts twice over, as well as being polled at Number 5 in the USA Billboard Radio Airplay Chart (where it knocked both Madonna & Justin Timberlake from the top spot). 2006 saw a collaboration with the act Solasso, where the track ‘Whatever – (Keep Me Guessing)’ (written and vocalled by Kate) was picked up by the Hed Kandi label and quickly followed up by other underground successes with Joni Lundgvist & Lost Witness among others.

2009 saw a much celebrated collaboration between Kate and internationally renowned DJ Matt Darey. The track ‘See The Sun’, again, written & vocalled by Kate was released by Noctural Global and became a huge hit with fans of the progressive trance scene. The Aurosonic mix made it to the Number 1 position on the Beatport Trance Chart and stayed there for 8 weeks.

Armin Van Buurens ASOT Poll named the tune among the top 5 tracks of 2009. Final celebration of it’s success came at the Beatport Awards 2010 where it was voted 3rd place in the ‘Trance Track Of The Year’ poll, positioned alongside Above & Beyond’s – Anjuna Beach and Tiestos – Louder Than Boom, which took first and second place respectively. The track is widely considered one of the best vocal Trance tunes of all time.

The Aurosonic mix of See The Sun was the No 1 play listed record on 46 Radio stations in 19 countries. A hit with all the biggest club DJ’s including Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Above & Beyond, Ferry Corsten, Markus Schulz and more. During 2010 Kate also released a second collaboration with Darey, ‘Black Canyon’, which was heavily supported by Armin Van Burren and listed within his top 20 tracks of 2010. Further collaborations with Matt Darey will take place in 2011 with tracks entitled ‘Crown of Thorns’ and ‘Red Rising’.

Kate then took some time out to record a solo record ‘Both Sides Of The Sun’ at the world famous Sawmills Studio in Cornwall and talks of her experience:

‘‘Dennis Smith, the owner of renowned studio Sawmills in Fowey and manager of rock band Muse came to hear the demos of a side project I was writing and offered me a production deal to make the record at Sawmills. Of course I jumped at the chance it was an amazing opportunity to make my first solo album, not only in a beautiful studio where the classic records by Oasis, Supergrass & Muse has been recorded, but also to work with some incredible musicians. I didn’t expect much to happen with the album, I just wanted the experience of making a record of my own songs, produced my way. I’m really proud of the songs and that people have really warmed to them. They really mean a lot to me and I put my heart and soul into writing them’’. – Kate Louise Smith

The resulting debut album Kate Smith – ‘Both Sides Of The Sun’ released by Laurel Eye Records in conjunction with Notting Hill Music is a 12 track LP full of beautiful, emotive songs with earthy, melody-laden productions reminiscent of the 70’s singer-songwriter. These are country & folk tinged love songs, which provide the perfect setting for Kate’s unique and emotional vocal timbre. The first track from Kate’s debut album ‘Million To One’ has recently been picked up by the winner of the Dutch X Factor (Voice Of Holland) Leonie Meijer. Her version of the song is due for release in 2011.

Now signed to Cloud 9 / Chrysalis Music, Kate is busy writing and recording. First release under Cloud 9 being ‘Liberate’ which she wrote for the new Signum album for 2011 (being the first single they released from the album entitled ‘For You’). 2011 will also see further releases and a world tour with Matt Darey and collaborations with DJ heavyweights ATB, Andy Moor & Orjan Nilsen.

Kate now writes and sings for the elite of the dance scene and has just completed recording several songs which she’s exclusively written for next ATB artist album, ‘Distant World’ due out in May 2011. Kate features on two special tracks ‘Where You Are’ and ‘Moving Backwards’.

Kate’s material has been released by : Armada, Sony, BMG, Hed Kandi, Universal, Virgin, EMI, Positiva and many other labels worldwide. Kate also writes songs for Television Programmes, Commercials and Films. Her music has been featured on a myriad of shows in Europe and the USA across all major networks, including ‘One Tree Hill and The OC.
