Justin Styles started listening to electronic music back in 1995. A good friend of his introduced him to a local radio show in Duluth called the Shack of Xaq. Every Tuesday night they would listen to the show where he found his first love in electronic music, happy hardcore. Even though at the time everything was “techno” to Justin, he began spending all of his McDonald’s paychecks in the “techno” section at On Cue. Buying solely based on cover and title, he filtered through numerous kinds of electronic music.
After attending a few local parties thrown in a community center known as Progress, Justin picked up DJ Dan’s “Funk the System” cd on a school trip to Chicago in 1999. From this point on, he was hooked on the banging funk sound of the cd. While not all of his friends appreciated it, he still held a strong appreciation for funky house.
Meanwhile, Justin was working hard learning how to dj. After working as a mobile dj, he had moved on to college radio djing under the guise of DJ Trahmatik on 91.3 KUWS. For 5 years he brought rap, hip hop, and r&b to the Twin Ports region creating hundreds of fans and enemies that would listen to his variety of games and skits engineered to draw listener response.
In 2001, Justin auditioned for a job at a local club to spin top 40 and hip hop. Using the dying club as his place to practice, he began honing his skills learning how to mix. Soon after, he was hired at Grandma’s Sports Garden, the largest club in the Duluth / Superior area. For 3 years he djed for tens of thousands of college students that made their way through the Garden.
Justin teamed up with DJ Van and Sean Merrell during their show on KUWS in 2003 and finally began mixing electronic music. After participating in some events with the duo, Catalyst and Anti-Valentine 2, Justin knew he would have to soon set aside mixing top 40 / hip hop clubs for electronic music.
Justin left the Duluth area and moved to Minneapolis in 2004 and was shortly after joined by Sean Merrell and DJ Van where they formed Nascent Numen. Over the summer of 2005 Sean and Justin djed several events from the Hawaiian Tropix Swimsuit contest at Lord Fletchers to hosting Stigma, their own night at Mell’s Beauty Bar.
Continuing with the momentum built in 2005, Justin proceeded to dj at several events with Sound in Motion at Spectrum and playing opposite Green Velvet and Eddie Halliwell at Karma night club. After proceeding on from the preliminaries, Justin also was announced as one of the winners of the Sound in Motion DJ contest and was rewarded by opening for Rank 1. With the weekly online radio shows Axis and Hubris and continued success moving dancefloors across the midwest, Justin will only prosper within the electronic dance scene.
