Jean Paul’s roots lie in Motown, a city known for giving birth to entire genres of music. He found his inspirations in the soulful vibes of Detroit before buying his first records. He grew up singing in his school and church choir, and tried his hand at various instruments leading to his current musical endeavors as a DJ.
At 18 he met world renowned DJ and producer, Terrence Parker, in Pontiac’s Velvet lounge. After testing his talents in Tulsa under the tutelage of DJ Yunus (Istanbul, Turkey) he came into his own.
Since then, Jean Paul has played in multiple cities across the globe, including Amsterdam, Chicago, Detroit, Montreal, Sacramento, Toronto, and Tulsa. His mixes have been featured on broadcasts for Germany’s Hithouse with Bernie B, England’s Urban Groovez with Paul Duxburie a.k.a. Duxie, France’s Nulog with Tintin, Netmusique out of Toronto with DJ Hali, gospelhousemusic.com, cjam 91.5 in Windsor, 90.9 FM and 97.9 in his hometown of Detroit.
Over the past few years, Jean-Paul has held a residency at 9 South and become involved with Detroit-based Souldega Music, which led to a residency at Carbon Lounge and Tavern on The Park. He then picked up a weekly at Lush after a live vocal performance with Terrence Parker and Moreese at the Movement festival of 2004.
In 2005 Jean-Paul held a residency at the Mint Cafe before further establishing Rooted Groovez. The Wednesday night shows he hosts on Netmusique bring a Detroit flavor to the international house community. Recently Jean-Paul was playing at Crave frequently and looks to opportunities in his new surroundings.
