Biography

Newcastle born and bred, 27-year-old DJ James Wilson was first turned on to the sounds of house music after seeing Deep Dish play at Shindig, back in 1998.

Taking his musical influences from legendary DJ Danny Tenaglia, as well as Steve Lawler and the aforementioned Deep Dish, James has developed a great passion for what he calls “proper house music” – deep, sexy, dark and hypnotic grooves.

After promoting his own successful nights around Newcastle, James wanted to further broaden his musical horizons with an idea he had to set up his own label. This label would give him a base from which to release the music he loves.

Upon setting up the label, Climax Recordings, James has built up a good following from only the first few releases. Climax’s tracks have received great support from DJ’s such as John Digweed, Sander Kleinenberg, Nick Warren, Dave Seaman, Gordon Kaye and Chris Fortier, and also from greatly respected producers such as Parks & Wilson, Jondi & Spesh, Trendroid and Bill Hamel, to name but a few.

With the label’s growing reputation, James has been able to call upon the services of respected up-and-coming producers and remixers such as Earth Deuley (Tango, Low Pressings, Addictive), FaceDown (Junior) and Hellpass (Renaissance), who have all turned out tracks and remixes for the label. Alongside this, James has spent time developing some of the home-grown talent he has signed to the label, such as Tim Fretwell, who’s work has impressed John Digweed so much that Mr. Digweed has enlisted to undertake a couple of remixes for his very own Bedrock label – praise indeed. Paul Lancaster, a local DJ, producer and remixer has also been developed and he will have a forthcoming track released on Lee Burridge’s Fire label.

Having Climax has helped James build up his DJing career – in 2001 he took in gigs in Pittsburgh, London and also at the Creamfields After-Party. That year also saw him take two residencies, at the up-and-coming Sunday Trading in Newcastle, and Embrace in Liverpool, which should continue well beyond 2002.

James currently runs Climax Recordings, where he will continue to release quality house music, develop the artists and constantly seek to further raise the profile of the label. Alongside Climax, James will continue to develop his DJing career by continuing his residencies in both Liverpool and Newcastle, whilst all the time aiming for more and more gigs.

Musically, James combines smooth deep house grooves with tribal percussion and dark progressive rhythms, yet always maintains that foundation of hypnotic funk. He fuses together these elements to take the dance-floor on a deep, dark, dubbed-out journey to a far away place.
