Georg Conrad and Marius Bubat get to know each other in the nineties when they’re still in high school. Sharing the same taste in music and a love for bands like Weezer, Radiohead and Pavement, they soon form an indie – rockband with two further high school friends. After graduation the band splits and Marius and Georg move to Cologne where they get in touch with electronic dance music, inspiring them to develop a more sequencer-based sound themselves.
Their first live appearance as COMA takes place at c/o pop Festival 2007 in Cologne in front of the entire local techno scene. Kompakt DJ and c/o pop program director Tobias Thomas is thrilled by their show and books them for his famous Cologne-based techno party Total Confusion, their accolade and stepping stone to an international career as a techno live-act.
Looking back, Tobias Thomas reminisces: „that was one fucking magic moment“.
COMA release their debut EP on FIRM, probably most open-minded label of the Kompakt family, in March 2008. Their title track „Easy“ celebrates their pop music roots through vocals and a Beck quote, their B-Side „Green“ becomes a crowd pleaser for famous German DJ’s like Superpitcher or Sascha Funke. They also source a new studio which they share with ADA, a playground and meeting point for fellow musicians and friends like MIT and Dillon. Coma also take part in the Easyjet culture touring Europe to clubs in Barcelona, Amsterdam and Paris.
2009 is COMA’s most active year so far. They release their 2nd EP on FIRM called „Choices“ and tour through Germany supporting Junior Boys. They further release their first EP on Kompakt („Crystal“) in August, its B-side „Sum“ being a contribution to the famous Kompakt Compilation „Total 10“. COMA are currently working on their debut album which is going to be released next year. German music magazine De:Bug predicts: „They are among the Greatest of Kompakt in the near future.“ We agree.
