A Washington-area progressive electro house DJ, Christauff has participated in the local DC/Baltimore scene since 1993, going to raves in high school & college, and attending parties at Buzz, Fever & Traxx. Orbital, William Orbit, The Orb, and 808 State albums got him into EDM in high school.
In 1996-97 he lived in England for a year at the University of Lancaster, and got a good look at how the rest of Europe partied. While there, he was lucky enough to see LTJ Bukem & MC Conrad live, attend Manchester & London clubs, and listen to Chemical Brothers & Underworld albums, Eye-Q Record releases, as well as Sasha & Digweed, Paul Van Dyk and Carl Cox compilations, that were easily available at most local music stores. His DJ friends taught him a little about mixing on turntables and he sucked royally, but had fun and learned a bit.
After returning from England, listening to Pete Tong’s s Radio 1 show online, every Friday, he started collecting live DJ sets off of peer-to-peer networks, and finally found a way to get tracks and track listings in one place and stopped buying crap compilations from Sam Goody. He started mixing on his personal computer in 2000 using Mixmeister and other software packages and obsessed about buying tables.
In 2004, he took the plunge and bought turntables (something he should have done 10 years earlier, in his opinion, but money… alas, tables were expensive). Like most starting DJ’s he bought what he knew, and basically fell into playing hard Tiesto-style trance and Progressive House. After getting his first residency at de Lounge, a gay night club in Wheaton, MD, he learned about playing more to local tastes, as he quickly realized most people there wanted Gay house. Not liking just Madonna, Cher and the Village People remixes, he starting salting his sets with funky house and tech house. Some dug it, most still wanted Madonna & Cher.
Shortly thereafter in 2005, he started Crichango Productions with three other friends from de Lounge, and began throwing underground parties in Baltimore, MD, as well as a weekly party at Spy Club in Mt. Vernon with DJ Octane that lasted just under a year.
In the summer of 2006, he formed District Ignition with his current partners: Ciconte, ramz, 2rip, Pseudo Society, Dainbramage, Ciconte and LJ MTX (the duo known as The Octopus) and began running a weekly Friday event called Prefix at Ocean Drive nightclub in Wheaton, MD. District Ignition briefly moved their Friday night part to RNR Lounge in Chinatown, before starting up the weekly Snatch @ Ultrabar every Friday.
With District Ignition, Christauff runs, plays and promotes three parties a week, now:
He also has a monthly residency at XS Baltimore where he plays about three times a month on Saturdays and Sundays from 8pm-11pm. The weekends change, but the music is always deep house, trip hop, nu jazz, and some progressive house.
