Ben Abstrakt is a beat junkie – downtempo breaks, drum ‘n bass, jazzy and chill house, experimental, dub and ambient, have all long been part of this DJ’s eclectic sets aimed at the head nodders, chill cats , and jazz lovers.
As a founding member of Ocean City’s Skylab crew in 1997, Ben Abstrakt has played along side the likes of Dieselboy, Robbie Hardkiss, John Tab, Entity and many more while bringing his blend of new, classic and always funky cuts to crowds all across Maryland.
Growing up with the skating rink sounds of electro, hip hop and freestyle, through to new wave and industrial before discovering the hardcore breakbeat and techno in the DC and Baltimore rave scene in 1993, music has always been first for Ben Abstrakt.
Early sets at outlaw parties and house jams around the Frederick, Maryland area in 1995 featured a combination of hip hop, funky breaks and jungle – records influenced by weekly trips to early Ultraworld, Spiritual Movement, Fever and Buzz parties in the DC and Baltimore area.
In 1996 he entered the studio with Terry Kilby of IXIS to co-produce his first track, “For Thought” – a hard-stepping drumn ‘n bass cut. Co-Production and DJ credit on a hip-hop / hardcore rock hybrid came in 1999 with the release of Method Efx’s ‘Industry Standards’ album. Subsequent shows featured Ben performing sold-out shows with that band as DJ Jack Zwiebak.
Moving to San Francisco, CA in 2002, proved to be a good move as Ben Abstrakt is now set to make even more noise on the DJ and production front. He has opened for the likes of Ursula Rucker of The Roots, and several top Bay Area DJ’s. There are also rumors of a new crew set to break out of San Fran in early 2004 featuring drum n bass, idm, and breaks producers, VJ’s and DJ’s. Watch this space…
