From the diverse culture of Trinidad, Andy-Himself formerly known to the Trinidadian Electronic Dance Music scene as “Android”, found his calling to dance music at a very young age. Inspired by the era when ‘Euro-Dance’ music consumed the air waves, he had found a form of inspiration to express his feelings through music. Being exposed to the deeper forms of Dance Music from travelling to the UK, Andy became more intrigued by the genre and continued buying more Electronic Dance Music compilations. It was through this that he received his education on the genre.
Andy became interested in mixing and ‘making’ these tunes he listened to on the compilations he purchased. His neighbour, who Deejayed at the time and is now a producer got him involved in mixing songs. After dabbling in the effects and pre-sets in “MTV Music Generator,” and dropping a few songs at a house party at age 15, Andy knew he wanted to take Deejaying seriously. He knew he had to spread the word of his music somehow. Little did he know that production was the answer.
After saving for DJ equipment , travelling to other countries to discover other sub genres of Electronic Dance Music, as well as practising day and night, Andy began freelancing at clubs, lounges and bars around Trinidad and a few in Toronto and London as well. At the age of twenty-four, with what he would call a “mature taste in Electronic Dance Music,” the Dj and producer continued to gain more exposure in both the underground and commercialised entertainment markets in Trinidad and still enjoyed gigs at popular nightclubs, lounges, bars and exclusive events.
Andy-Himself enrolled in an audio engineering school in Port-Of-Spain Trinidad (Studio 161) where his mentor, Omari, a well known singer in the early 90’s from Trinidadian Rapso group ‘Kindred,’ taught him the intricacies of becoming a producer. He plans to produce quality music and hopes to put Trinidad on the map globally for Electronic Dance Music. He completed a production which was his final project for the audio engineering course. The production was entitled “Want” (move and wine down) which is a fusion between Tribal -house music and soca music. When it was played in Europe, many classified it as ‘UK Funky’.
Andy has collaborated with Local Trinidadian musicians namely Rock band ‘5 miles to midnight’, Pop star Shazelle (remix of her single “pick me up” and other upcoming projects),K.Rich,Iziah,Horizon, Jazz singer Caroline Mair as well as Derron Ellies a Pannist who performs with the Percussive Harmonic Instrument ( P.H.I.). He continues to work on many projects with other upcoming artistes as this helps him gain more experience within other genres of music.
One of Andy’s productions entitled “Push it” is featured on a compilation named “Islands of the World Fashion Week Volume 1,” released end of September 2010 and also November 2010 under “ELEKTRIKA RECORDS”. “Push it” as well as his other single "Finger Eleven are both on the same EP. His other track “Sureditch” was signed to ‘DIGITAL KILLER RECORDS’ in August 2010. He still continues to promote his music globally and is not giving up anytime in the near future. He continues to gain more knowledge and experience as a young upcoming producer and he realises that even the professionals within the field learn something new everyday.
Andy’s remix of Shazelle’s “Pick Me Up” won ‘BEST INTERNATIONAL DANCE SONG OF 2010’ for the’Toronto Exclusive Magazine Awards 2010’ and he was also the official dj for the launch of the cigarette ‘Dunhill Fine Cut’ for WITCO (British American Tobacco) and also for the launch of the cigarette ‘Vogue’.
Look out for what’s next!
