Alex Muirden first touched a pair of dec’s in Winter 2009 when he was on a Duke Of Edinburgh 6 week DJ Course where he would attend an hour class every tuesday with a DJ tutor named Nav (Bald MC). He only took the DJing course because it sounded like an easy way to gain a skill to pass Duke Of Edinburgh. Little did he know he would be basing hes life around from this skill.
3 weeks into the course Alex knew that DJing was what he wanted to take up as a hobby, so after seeking advice about a good set up from his friend Dan Van he went out and bought his first set of CDJ’s which was a box standard KAM set up. Within the first 6 months of DJing Dan Van took Alex to play in a small local bar named Fatty’s playing Funky House.
6 months after the DJ course Alex had his first real set in southend’s very own Zinc Night Club for the U18’s night Lock Stock playing commercial/Top40 Remix’s. This is where Alex gained his first real piece of club experience on how to read crowds. Alex enjoyed the experience even though he wasn’t playing he’s own style of music which at the time was Hed Kandi Funky & House Classics.
Just after Alex’s first set at Zinc him and Dan Van applied for a local online radio show called Safe radio. After receiving a message back from the radio show they was asked to send in a promo CD of their music and them talking. Alex and Dan gained a 2 hour weekly slot on Fridays 6 till 8.
2 months into his residency at Lock Stock Alex was asked to DJ at Ministry Of Sound. Dan offered Alex a slot to play B2B with him.
After Alex’s set at Ministry Of Sound Alex gained a real love for Tech and Electro House and put Funky House to one side; Alex was still playing Commercial in Zinc for Lock Stock and also played the odd night there too.
After a year of DJing Alex was confidently recording 60 minute mixes and posting them onto his Mixcloud and making CD’s for the public to hear. Through luck Alex’s brother Daniel was friends with one of the female promoters at southend’s Storm Night Club (now knowen as Mansion). After Daniel showed her Alex’s Mix CD she told Daniel she really enjoyed Alex’s sound and that she would put a good word in for him. From this Alex had his second real dose of club experience playing every saturday in January.
Alex and Dan was still doing radio presenting but gained to weekly shows. One was drive time friday 5-6 the other was House music 10 – 12
Whilst all this was happening with Storm and radio Alex also bagged himself a set at EGG night club on the 3rd saturday of January. Alex offered Dan Van the opportunity to play EGG with him but Dan couldn’t play so Alex gave his friend Jack Lyons a real piece of club experience.
From the set at Storm Alex gained reputation as the new DJ in southend. Word quickly got around to Too Damn Glam. When Alex finished his month Residency at storm the owner of Too Damn Glam messaged Alex asking if he was interest in playing in Pacha Night Club in the Global Room. Alex once again snacked up the opportunity to play in another one of London’s super clubs.
Alex was then called by Too Damn Glam to play there next slot at Pacha. Alex again accepted. When Alex arrived he had a shock when he was told he wasn’t playing in the global room of Pacha, he was in fact playing the main room. Alex was thrilled to pieces and said it was the most nerves he had felt from DJing.
From here Alex has gone on with Too Damn Glam to play in nightclubs such as Space (Ibiza), Delanos (Ibiza) and events such as HD Festival, Noahs Ark Boat Party and Secret Party Project at Versace Mansion.
Alexs has played in clubs and bars such as Space (Ibiza), Ministry Of Sound (London), EGG (London) Hush (Ibiza), Hed Kandi (Southend), Delanos (Ibiza), Gigalum (London), Talk (Southend), Rouge (Southend), Mansion (Southend), Mayhem (Southend), Zinc (Southend), Sunrooms (Southend), Bar Bluu (Southend)
