Ajele

Zürich, Switzerland

Electro House, Tech House

Biography

Since she started djing Ajele has built up a wealth of experience in many different forms of electronic music: house, breakbeat, electro, disco, punk-funk, drum’n’bass right down to downbeat and backroom eclectic sets. Through this she has found her own unique sound.

After several years and having made herself a well respected name on the Swiss club scene she set up her own event label, “Chicks Behind the Decks” which she launched in august 2002, and to date has made numerous events with other female artists across a wide spectrum of electronic music and live performances. It was the first time such a concept had been done in Switzerland and was a wake up call to female djs all over the country. With this she has also hooked up with many other organisations in other countries dedicated to highlighting female talent.

She has a taste for the cutting edge, she began to incorporate new sounds she was being exposed to elsewhere into her sets. Along with Smash FX (one of Switzerland’s Premier breaks outfits) Ajele was one of the first Swiss djs to champion the breaks sound and bring it to the attention of the house crowd. As one of the few supporters of this sound she was chosen to play repeatedly for Kosheen’s concerts in Zurich. Nowadays her search for fresh and inspiring sounds has led her to some of the great and innovative producers who feature in her current sets: John Tejada, Anthony Rother, Tiefschwarz, Nic Fanciulli, Vincenzo, Martini Brs and the output of labels like Freak n’ Chic, Fine, Kompakt, Get Physical, Crosstownrebels, to mention but a few.

2004 was her first whole summer working in Ibiza yet by the end she had played in some of the best venues. In June the bar ‘Lo Cura’ was added to the list of cooler hangouts in Ibiza town and for four months Ajele was resident. Playing there five nights a week brought her to the attention of several promoters who quickly took her on board for their club nights. She was a regular for We Love Sundays in Space and on several occasions was invited to play for Manumission in Privilege and at their Carry On in Space on the mainfloor and terrace.

2005 the We Love crew invited her in may to play at their Homelands festival in England and back in Ibiza she played for Dave Beer’s (Back2Basics) Electric Ladyland and for Smokin Jo and Tim Sheridan’s NastyDirtySexMusic, both in Space’s Redbox on alternate Sundays. Also Manumisssion took her on board again for their Carry On sessions at Space. She has been a regular sight out on the terrace playing back 2 back with David Phillips and in the Music Box in Privilege, alongside talent such as Ladytron, Whitey, Ewan Pearson and Fischerspooner.

With radio playing an ever bigger part in the music and club scene on the island she played weekly shows to promote WeLove Space and Manumission on Global Radio and Flaix fm, the two most highly rated wavelengths.

In autumn she embarked on a 5 date tour of cities in China, sparking off interest resulting in more upcoming dates in Asia.

2006 will see her re-locate from Zurich to London, whose vibrant and healthy music scene she finds particularly inspiring. She will however keep her hand in back in Switzerland, working with the agency Booking.li and a new club opening in January, hiveclub.ch, where she will have a monthly residency. By June it will be time to pack the bags and make tracks for the sunny white island once again.

She has a growing interest in production and in future will be investing more time in developing this further.
