A big events promoter once made the following truthful comment about Nelson: “Like a good wine that matures with age.”
As one of South Africa’s most influential DJ’s, currently on the international front, Nelson’s music reflects a quality synonymous with a full-bodied South African wine. There is a remarkable maturity visible in his work – the result of his diversity and drive, his strong beliefs about support amongst DJ’s in the competitive world of mixing and music production, and over 15 years of experience in the industry.
The launch of his own record label, Afroboogie, and well supported first release “From Johannesburg with love EP” define him as a DJ with vision, a man with impeccable talent who is expanding his horizons and earning international respect.
Nelson started his career in 1989, playing all night sets in Johannesburg’s top nightclubs. After many years behind the decks he started playing and promoting some of the early raves, and swiftly became a respected name in South Africa’s club culture.
He was a resident for four years at ESP in Johannesburg, making Sunday afternoons at the superior club unforgettable. He then decided to put experience gained into running his own clubnight, Flyhouse which hosted many international dj’s and was rated one of the best nights out during its four year run. With all this going on and a gig schedule taking him to all corners of the country he established himself as a talented and confident DJ, playing at major events like Ministry of Sound, ICE, Cream, Womad and Pacha, with audiences of up to 20 000 people. He supported world class DJ’s including Carl Cox, Sasha, John Digweed, Nick Warren, Junior Sanchez and Eric Morillo showing off his vast experience next to the big names. He was one of the first South African DJ’s to initiate the release of a club mix compilation and mixed nine albums in total – two under his club night name Flyhouse.
After reaching immaculate heights under African skies, he chose to abandon the stagnating dance scene in South Africa, realizing that the next step forward in his career was music production. His relocation to Europe left the South African scene with fond memories of a DJ who communicates with his crowd, someone who is approachable and truly speaks through his music. Nelson has since breached the international scene with bookings in Ibiza, London, Lisbon, Moscow, St Petersburg and Belgium. With his open and diverse style – ranging from tribal to tech and progressive house, as well as his knowledge and commitment to the dance scene, he is fast becoming a dj for the international dance scene.
The release of the Afroboogie label introduced the underground sound of Johannesburg to the world, exposing the developing South African club scene internationally. The releases impress with a wide variety of elements including deep, haunting basslines and energy for the international dancefloors.
As a dj, he is a crowd pleaser with more energy behind the decks than a Duracell bunny and although his dj set ventures into the unknown he always seems to find the space to drop the unforgettable classics leaving his crowds wanting more. Nelson believes that giving the dancefloor a good time will ensure they keep coming back. Nelson successfully manages to create a unique platform in his music by blending his well-known tribal sound with strong European influences. His work and dedication illustrate an artist’s journey from African ground to the heart of Europe. Like a world class wine – produced and perfected – and definitely ready to drink.
