4Mal is one of the most brilliant musical alliances on the Russian dance scene of the recent years. Anton Guzev and Evgeny Svalov duet formed in 2002 and in the spring of 2005 really made themselves known in the Western world of dance music. They were the first of all the Russian musicians to make their debut on the famous British label “Baroque Records” and release the single “Twilight” on vinyl. Since then the whole number of copies was three times extra printed and sold out, and the guys from Yekaterinburg keep surprising and making people happy with new dance music and achievements – abroad and in Russia as well.
To date they’ve created and released over 40 their own tracks and remixes, and many of which – on the leading world musical labels, in particular Global Underground, Baroque/Baroque Limited, Newstate/Nebula, Armind/Armada/Coldharbour, Beat Freak/Distinto, Alter Ego/Alter Ego Progressive/Amenta and Bellarine.
4Mal works were more than once supported in clubs, on the radio and in the compilations by such stars as Paul Van Dyk, Sasha, Paul Oakenfold, Tiesto, Hernan Cattaneo, Armin Van Buuren, Andy Moor, Anthony Pappa, Dave Seaman, Steve Lawler, Matt Darey, Solar Stone, Markus Schulz, Above & Beyond, David West, Desyn Masiello, MoShic and Deep Dish.
Paul van Dyk, having presented one of the new 4Mal tracks (“Static Noise”) in his radio show VONYC Sessions in 2007, made special mention live: “4Mal guys are always responsible for some very-very cool material”.
They themselves best of all identify their musical style: it’s the deep emotional progressive house. Their music is beautiful, melodious, catchy, fascinating. It’s the music for recreation, the music which you never get tired of, even after three hours on the dance floor to a 4Mal’s DJ set.
In 2006 the Urals duet continued moving to a success and reached a new level: at first it was working with American group “Audiodrone” and experience of creating radio and club edits of their music for the leading FM radio stations. After that, along with the “Audiodrone” singer Cory Andrew and the German musician Matthew Adams, they recorded the single “Technology and computer parts”.
Markus Schulz was constantly rejoicing Ibiza guests with this track and when he included it in his CD “Ibiza ’06”, new perspectives opened before Anton and Evgeny. The guys received an invitation to open the repertoire of a new British label “Amenta”. Having skillfully combined progressive and tech house, 4mal didn’t miss it – the original version of the track and all the remixes received the all-around support both at home, in Britain, and around the world.
In December 2006, after a three-year break, the two musicians got back to DJ activities. Before that time, from 2001 till 2003, Anton had been the resident in one of the renowned clubs of Yekaterinburg, in the DJ’s room of which his musical tastes and skills had been forming.
The break was caused solely by a desire to create something of their own and not to buy and mix other guys’ things. First author works were tested on dance floor during residential DJ sets, thus the 4Mal unity obtained important experience of understanding what the people really liked, and could turn their talent in the right direction. Anton and Evgeny do not confine themselves to their own resources – they have friends and colleagues to record new singles, and who also record male and female vocals, acoustic guitars, electro guitars and live instruments.
Their creative efforts were particularly distinguished by musicians of the legendary British group “Trafik”. Specially for the release of their album “Club Trafikana” on the most authoritative label Global Underground Andrew and John ordered Yekaterinburg guys a remix of their track “Salt in NYC”. Continuation of the collaboration with Global Underground is to follow.
In the autumn of 2007 Anton and Evgeny received at once two large-scale offers to make remixes. One was from DJ number 1 in Russia, Ivan Rudyk (the club and radio hit Things That Make You Feel created by Rudyk in co-authorship with a talented resident of “Comedy Club”, Timur Rodriguez), and the second offer – from the only Russian DJ in the world top100 DJ list, Dmitry Almazov (Bobina, the club and radio hit, the official cover version of Kylie Minogue’s legendary song “Slow”). Both the Ekaterinburg duet’s remixes were released in long run in Russia, in the CIS and beyond the borders, and have already found the audience everywhere.
4Mal had a very dynamic beginning of 2008: the remix for Armind recording company owned by the 2007 world best DJ, Armin van Buuren (remix of a track Jose Amnesia feat. Jennifer Rene – Invincible), then the remix for one of the best Japan DJs, DJ 19 (track Breakin’ Of The Dawn, 19Box Records label), and the remix for the Russian perspective KONTAKT Recordings label (track R-Tem feat. Nata TJ – No Game To Play).
4Mal’s club performance of today is always an event because they are musicians first of all and not only DJs.
Anton and Evgeny always bring their brand new works in clubs to make the guests happy; they are constantly in touch with the colleagues around the world from whom the guys receive music, also exclusive, and which is heard on dance floors much earlier than it sees the light and is bought to be played with a laptop, CDs or vinyl by ordinary DJs.
Besides, 4Mal always get new material from recording companies who publish their works. The status of perspective and active musicians allied with the guys’ all personal qualities allows one to say they really have something on all club DJs.
The duet’s openness for new contacts and acquaintances is actually enhancing their reputation, and their performances – individuality and originality. Every month the duet’s author program “Inner Sense” is live on the Afterhours.FM radio station where Anton and Zhenya present colleagues. tracks and their own new works that cannot be heard in clubs by everyone.
In 2007 their hometown declared 4Mal the best musicians of 2006, and after the general vote they became Welcome Music Night Life Awards prize laureates.
