#NowPlaying - Terminally iLL by ill.Gates

14 March 2017 - - The DJ List

You may have caught San Francisco's prolific producer ill.Gates tearing up the festival circuit in the past few years or are planning to catch one of bass music's best names this year opening for BASSNECTAR in Atlantic City next month or at Lightning in a Bottle in May. In any case, what you should be doing is bumping his latest full-length studio album Terminally.iLL, which made its worldwide debut last Friday March 10.

Featuring tracks with Dub FX, Stephan Jacobs, KJ Sawka, Hugo The Poet, Mimosa, CloZee (and many many others) in addition to a commanding remix of G Jones x Minnesota’s ‘Thunderdome,’ each track on the album both possesses authoritative basslines and exudes positive, feel-good vibes, resulting in your new favorite album to blast this spring.

At first listen, it is evident an unbelievable amount of work and love went into creating this album. Collab with KJ Sawka, ‘Unsung Heroes’ features a sample of Mario Savio protesting at Berkeley on the Sproul Hall steps, delivering a speech which is widely considered to be one of the best in American Political Oratory History. The Sproul Hall steps were subsequently renamed the Mario Savio Steps to honor his speech.

‘Paradise Won’ was written at the Paradise One music retreat in November 2015 in front of a live audience. The recording of this is available at ProducerDJ.Club. The day also hosted workings on rap and beatboxing from Dub FX, and Hugo the Poet, which ILL.GATES attended. He asked them to contribute vocals to his workshop tune, and they agreed only upon condition that ill.Gates rap a verse as well. The resulting track ‘Paradise Won’ is the first track to feature an ill.Gates vocal.

Impossible to narrow down to just one favorite track, my best recommendation is to play the entire album loud and on repeat for the foreseeable future. SO GOOD.

ill.Gates says it best himself -
My new album finally dropped today! The album is called 'Terminally iLL' because it's intended to shine a light in dark times. It's easy to make angry or sad music, but it's really difficult to create happiness. This one took a long time because I tried to cram as much positivity and gratitude into it as possible. These songs are here to be your alarm clock, your road trip anthem, your secret happy dance, the soundtrack to a mountaintop high five with the squad. Please listen to these songs and know you're never alone. I'm trying to make as much of an impact with this album as possible, so please spread it far and wide, and if any of this resonates with you, please consider supporting this project by entering the contest or buying the album on Beatport.
