Nora En Pure Interview: DJ/Producer talks “Tears In Your Eyes” and what's to come this year

14 June 2018 - - - The DJ List

Nora En Pure will be playing both weekends of Tomorrowland in Belgium and will be returning to Ushuaia at the Garden of Madness in Ibiza this summer.

Nora En Pure is Daniela Di Lillo, who was raised in South Africa and grew up in Zürich, Switzerland. Her breakthrough track was “Come With Me”, followed by “Morning Dew”, “Lake Arrowhead” and recently “Tears In Your Eyes” which all saw widespread success. She has already made her debut at Coachella and was the only female talent to perform at Tomorrowland’s Mainstage Daybreak Session. Chances are you already heard her music on her own weekly radio show on SiriusXM Chill or seen her live stream performance at Ultra Music Festival.

How did you get started in music from the beginning?

When I was younger there was a lot of classical music influences in my family and my brother listened to rock music, therefore I was exposed both. I always loved music, but I did not expect to end up in electronic music at all. It became a hobby when I met some friends at university who had their own studios. They showed me how creative you can be. After that I started on a new project, but initially it was just on the side. Then all of a sudden it just took off you know!

Who or what would you say is your biggest musical inspiration?

I really enjoy film soundtracks. Like for example ones from Hans Zimmer. His works inspire me the most because to takes you away from where you are and puts you in a different place and feeling entirely. That is what I try to emulate! Some sort of elegance.

What’s the story behind your name?

In the beginning I was mostly inspired by deep and tech house in Germany. There were a lot of really random German names. So I wanted something a little more exotic that sticks out. But it is random and doesn't actually mean anything, but ‘Pure’ strongly relates to my organic sound..

Describe to us your sound.

I want to achieve the feeling of wanderlust. A feeling that makes you want to go travel somewhere and explore through its melodies and sounds. I like it to sound organic, but still pretty raw and chilled out. My goal is for listeners to transport themselves somewhere like a beach or jungle in their minds!

Talk to us about “Tears In Your Eyes” that hit 10 million streams so far.

I actually stared working on that song three years with a different vocal. I love the violins and the percussions. How they sound together is incredible. We sent it to some labels and they were thinking that the arrangement could be a little bit better and the vocals a bit more on point, so we waited a bit for the release and the end product I really love. It's sort of classic for radio because the vocals are catchy and emotional. It's quite a timeless song.

Talk to us about Purified Radio. How do you go about curating the content?

Good question... sometimes it's partly released we have on our in-house labels and other times I just feature whatever I feel fits in. I like a lot of genres and therefore I like to mix it up and keep it interesting. For example I include Indie Dance, Nu Disco, Tech House, Deep House, House or even Progressive House. Whatever sounds funky or groovy to me, but always keeping it elegant.

You’re getting pretty close to Episode 100. Can we expect something special for that milestone?

It's been a lot of work. I don't know yet but there might be a live stream of some event. I have Purified Love Mobile at the Street Parade which is this Summer, but I don't think it will match up exactly with the date of the 100th episode. I don't like to set up and plan a lot of things in advance. Either it's going to happen or otherwise I can let listeners choose what the best tracks they've heard so far or something like that. :)

Talk to us about the opening party during Miami Music Week.

I liked it. It was pretty intimate, but the energy was really good. It was the first Purified Event at Miami Music Week and opening party on a Tuesday. I was really happy how it turned out.

You have a Street Parade coming up with Purified Love Mobile this August. What can we expect?

It will definitely be announced soon!

You’re slated to perform both weekends of Tomorrowland 2018 and Ushuaia at Garden of Madness. Do you usually try to prepare for these festival sets or do you try to shy away from planning?

So the funny thing is that I always plan, especially for longer sets, to go more melodic and one direction, but almost always end up playing more groovy stuff because it works better at festivals. People enjoy dancing to my music. So I always end up mixing whatever I had planned before with spontaneous stuff. I'll see how it turns out this year. The Daybreak sessions at Tomorrowland main stage are really special because you really begin when there is no one. Like right when the festival doors open and you are playing. It slowly fills up and you're on this massive stage. It's a nice challenge to build up the mood. The second weekend I'll be playing at another stage for an hour or so. It's very different. I'm looking forward to it.
