This track marks his third release on his own label Homewerk since September. The Los Angeles native is known for his groovy disco beats that blends with modern dance music and house fans alike such as his hits "Me Without You" and "If You’re Leaving" which have fostered over a million listeners every month on Spotify. We got a chance to meet with him at his first ever back-to-back performance with GOLDROOM at Mezzanine in San Francisco.
How did you get into music from the beginning?
I have always been a music fan, but I started playing drums when I was in fifth grade and from there, I have been in a number of bands up until doing my current project.
Who or what would you say is your biggest inspiration?
My girlfriend who is actually in the other room. She's listening!
What’s the story behind your name?
Honestly, I knew I was going to start this project where I was going to make dance music and I wanted something that kind of meant something to me. A word kind of describes my motives in making this music. So I was calling it Youth and I realized pretty quickly I probably couldn't get away with calling it Youth because other people have probably been doing that for years. So I put the Le to create some kind of mystery behind it. I think some people are a bit confused that I don't have a French accent.
Describe to us your sound.
I say dance music infused with R&B and catchy hooks. But sometimes it's easier to call it indie dance music.
Talk to us about your record “Walk Away”.
So that was a rehash of Paula DeAnda's 2006 hit called by the same name "Walk Away". It was just a song that I always loved and I find myself [when I'm making new songs for LE YOUTH] going after songs that I grew up listening to. So stuff that has inspired me in the past. With Le Youth, I like to use a lot of samples. So when I'm looking for samples, I find stuff that maybe people haven't have heard in a long time and something that means something to me. So yeah, that's my inspiration for that track.
Talk to us about your label “Homewerk”.
Homewerk is a way for me to take control of my career. I've done a major label [Sony] deal for two years and although it worked great it kind of slowed my release and I didn't get a lot of the songs out that I wanted to get out. So when I got out of deal the natural sort of evolution for Le Youth was to create my own label, my own home.
Do you have any upcoming releases you can share with us about?
Yeah, I think I can...it's called "Talk Dirty". I've been playing it for a long time and other DJ friends have been playing it as well. It's going to be a lot of fun to finally be putting it out. You will hear it tonight!
How has your tour been so far?
Tour has been excellent. You know, I have no complaints. I just came from Sacramento and tomorrow I play Chicago. You know, traveling the world and playing music isn't the worst life...so I could never possibly complain about it.
You’re playing your debut b2b set with Goldroom tonight - how do you feel?
I'm excited! I've been anxious...this is the thing. So yeah it's a bit of anxiety but good anxiety. But I am excited.
What is one thing you’re obsessed about?
