Exclusive Interview With Tujamo

28 August 2017 - - - The DJ List

We are big fans of DJ and producer TUJAMO, and he creates some wonderfully catchy bits of dance music. Having just had his "One On One" remixed, we got speaking to him to find out more.

First things first, please tell us a little about yourself… who are you and where are you currently based?

My name is Tujamo, I’m a DJ and producer from Germany and currently based there as well.

How long have you all been making music? What made you first want to write it?

Music has been by my side ever since I can remember. It all started with DJing and a DJ contest, which I won. One of my following gigs was a warm up for the mighty Laidback Luke and when I saw him playing his own tracks I knew that I had to do likewise. So, I started producing and it happened pretty fast from there on out.

What do you enjoy most about having music as your career?

Definitely the opportunity to get around and see so much of our planet. It’s incredible to see so many different cultures and getting to play for all of them. I really enjoy the traveling and I’m very grateful for that.

Where do you mostly draw your inspiration? How would you describe your trademark sound to those who haven’t heard it yet?

The traveling again. Every city I see has its own vibe and I tend to be inspired by that. My mobile is filled with loads of memos where I came up with melodies or beats or anything that I want myself to remember when I’m back in the studio.

We love the brilliant “One On One” – such a catchy tune! How long did you work on it for? Are you happy with the final result?

Thank you. I’m super happy. It was something a bit different from my usual club tracks but has had an equally amazing feedback ever since its release. The whole production did not take longer than a few days. As soon as I have an idea it usually never takes longer than that, unless I have to wait for certain parts of the track like a vocal or an additional instrument.

Where do you see your sound progressing over the coming months/years?

It’s been quite a ride the last couple of months. Some stick to their sound and fans appreciate it, some try out new things and fans seem to enjoy that likewise. It’s very difficult to say where things are moving at the moment. The big EDM bubble popped some time ago, so there’s no real road you need to take to get somewhere. I actually like this state. It means originality is being brought back to the table. You can't just copy/paste and for the first time, it will definitely not work. It’s a good time to come up with something unique.

If you could work with any artist (alive or dead) on a track, who would you choose and why?

I would want Michael Jackson to write something with me. Every time I hear his music it just overwhelms me how good it sounds, even his first albums. If I listen to my stuff from when I started, even with the technology involved and then think about how they made music back in the days, how tedious the process of recording and arranging was. I have the biggest respect for the music that was born back then and the quality it had, even 30-40 years later.

What do you have coming up next in 2017? Are there any more releases in the pipeline you can share with us yet?

There are and I hope I can finish them in time. There’s another remix approaching for two really well known artists. Unfortunately, that’s all I can say at this point. But it will be big. I think I already found someone filming me playing it any way, haha. The rest is still a secret...
