Exclusive Interview With Milwin

07 June 2017 - - - The DJ List

With a serene and melodic debut for Universal Sweden, "Follow Your Heart" now out, Milwin is a producer and DJ to keep in your sights as the year unfolds.

We sought out the Swedish artist to hear more about making the single, and where he plans to take his sounds next.

First things first, please tell us a little about yourself… who are you and where are you currently based?

I’m Milwin! A 20 year old producer/ DJ from South Sweden.

How long have you been making music properly for? Do you remember what made you first want to write it?

I’ve always been interested in music, for as long as I can remember. My father is a band member and singer so it’s been around me all my life. I went to music school and started to DJ when I was 12. When I was about 15 years old I started to produce my own music.

What do you enjoy most about being an artist?

To do what I really love to do, which is making music and to reach out to people. When you’re alone or with other musicians in the studio creating a song which you later will play in front of people that dance to it, is an amazing feeling.

Where do you mostly draw your inspiration? How would you describe your individual sounds to those who haven’t heard it yet?

I’m from Sweden so I get my inspiration depending on the weather ;) No, but I listen to all different genres of music, I can pick up a sound from a movie or something I hear when I’m out walking, then try to turn that in to a production and be creative. I’ve always been told to stick to one sound to not create confusion about who I am as an artist, but I produce music in so many different styles and sounds that I hope the diversity will define me as an artist. I’ve only just begun to release music, so time will tell.

The fantastic “Follow Your Heart” from you has just landed. How long did you work on it for? What do you feel the featured vocalist Sha brought to it?

The song "Follow Your Heart" is a project started in October 2016. I found this amazing singer called Sha, who had written a song I really wanted to work with and put my sound into it. That song Sha wrote is the lyrics and vocals on "Follow Your Heart." The combination with my production and Sha’s singing became a reality and was the song that caught Universal Music’s attention, which is where I’m signed to today.

Are you happy with the final result? How have fan reactions been?

I’m really happy with the results! I’ve had so much good reactions; the song has almost streamed a million times on Spotify in less then a month, so I’m very humbled.

Where do you see your sound progressing over the coming months/years?

It's hard to say, I can be in the studio producing a trap beat or a pop song. The creative process of making music is not, for me at least, to sit down and think, “now I need to do this specific sound.” It’s more that I catch a feeling when playing the guitar or drums and then turn that into a song. So who knows what’s coming next...

If you could work with any artist (alive or dead) on a track, who would you choose and why?

There are so many I want to work with, but if I need to choose one: Pharrell Williams. He’s been an inspiration to me for a long time and still is to this day - I believe we would be able to create something really special together.
