Cape Town collective GOODLUCK are taking the globe by storm right now, thanks to their debut release through Ultra Music, "I've Been Thinking About You." We caught up with the gang to hear more about them, and what they have in the pipeline.
Firstly, please tell us a little about you… who are you and where are you currently based?
Well, there are 3 of us in the band - there’s Jules who is our singer and song writer, Matt who plays saxophone and keys and I’m Ben and I produce the music and play electronic drums in the live band. We are currently based in our hometown - Cape Town, South Africa although we spend a lot of time touring around the world.
How long have you been making music as a collective? How did you end up working together?
GoodLuck has been together since 2011 and I guess it was just our passion for electronic music and how we wanted to include live instrumentation, in both the writing and performing, in the club scene that brought us together. We started out performing a residency in a nightclub in Campsbay (a famous beach strip in Cape Town) and the project grew from there… We really just wanted to see more live performance in dance music and we have been on that mission that since we started.
What do you enjoy most about having music as your careers?
I think its the variation of lifestyle and work that constantly keeps you on your toes… some weeks you’re in Europe producing in Berlin, the next we’re shooting a music video in the Maldives… it's wild but super inspiring. You get to explore the world and perform in some incredible places. It can be exhausting and really challenging, and the business side of things is constantly changing and evolving, but thats what makes it interesting.
Where do you draw your inspiration from? How would you describe your sound to those who haven’t heard it yet?
Our sound is definitely melodic, and there is a deep element to it. We love to include organic sounds; from real Fender Rhodes, vintage synths and old crusty pianos - we tweak it into our dance music and then Jules writes the most beautiful lyrics and melodies over that.
You’ve just released “I’ve Been Thinking About You” through Ultra and it’s an awesome track! How long did you all work on it for? Are you happy with the final result?
It took a few months of backwards and forwarding! There were a couple different options for the drop section but I really wanted to have a powerful impact with a darker, more minimalist and clean instrumental drop. I think it catches a lot of people by surprise, but once they’ve heard it they go crazy for it - it's awesome watching audiences lose their minds at the drop.
Your success in South Africa has been amazing – do you have plans to target the rest of the world?
We have had an incredible response in South Africa and it's awesome to see our music doing so well there… but now we are ready for the rest of the world. We’ve got tours planned for Europe and we’re working on the US and South America next.
What are three tracks you can’t live without?
At the moment I am really enjoying…
Chris Malinchak - "So Good to Me"
Dua Lipa - "Be the One"
Nora en Pure - "Lake Arrow Head"
If you could work with any artist (alive or dead), who would you choose and why?
I’d love to work with Imogen Heap, she has an incredible approach to making electronic music and she shares my passion for doing everything yourself,
(Hahaha, sometimes not the wisest choice!)
What do you have coming up next in 2017? Are there any more releases in the pipeline you can share with us yet?
We are working on a whole bunch of new songs that we cant wait to share with everyone - we’ve got some awesome shows planned for Africa and Europe and we are hoping to get started on some across the world touring in the next couple of years… We will definitely keep you in the loop!
