Elephante recently kicked off his 'Animals Wanted' tour along with a brand new remix package on his successful single "Troubled" featuring BRKLYN, Fairlane and Haides. Each remix has a unique style which will be suitable for any dancefloor. This year has been a frenzy for ELEPHANTE just finishing his 'I Am The Elephante' tour earlier this Spring which made stops at Electric Zoo, Life in Color, Moonrise Festival and more. We got a chance to meet the man behind the moniker, aka Tim Wu, at his club performance this past weekend in San Francisco about his new tour, music and more.
How did you get into music from the beginning?
Yeah, I grew up playing piano I was classically trained. My mom made me take lessons. I did that when I was a kid. When I got into middle and high school, I started playing guitar, writing songs and singing in bands. Growing up I wanted to be John Mayer. I started making electronic music from then on and one thing led to another. People were really into it, fell in love with the genre and I went from there.
Who or what is your biggest musical inspiration?
Probably John Mayer like I said. I guess Skrillex was the guy who made me start producing music. Kaskade would be the guy who made me want to do this for a living.
Describe to us your sound.
I'm always wrestling with that. I think it's melodic, emotional dance music with a lot of energy. I try to make stuff that will make you want to dance or cry.
What’s the story behind your name?
It's a reference to the first elephant in the room. I was working a corporate job and there was an elephant in the room and I hated it. I wanted to make music. So I guess I became the elephant in the room.
You kicked off your ‘Animals Wanted’ tour earlier this month. How has it been so far?
It's been crazy man. I played a bunch of big festivals and clubs. Playing in Vegas. It was a dream man with all the shows I've played. It's so gratifying as a DJ being on the computer your whole life and being able to go out and play for these crowds.
What was one show that was unforgettable this year?
Everything during the Spring tour was the best time of my life. Recently, Moonrise Festival was incredible. All the people that was there made it a really special show.
Talk to us about the “Troubled” remix pack.
It's great. I think "Troubled" is a really important song to me. I just like to see what other people can do with the same song. It's very inspiring and the remixes are so cool. They all come from a place where I would have never taken the song. It's always amazing to see what other producers can do with the same thing.
Do you have any upcoming records you can share with us about?
Yeah, I'm working on a new EP and a bunch of other songs now. Still working on confirming the release dates and stuff but you can expect a new single in the Fall. I'm actually testing a new song out tonight that I have never played out before so we'll see how it sounds.
With your remix package, EP…can we expect a debut album next year possibly?
We'll see! I'm working on another big project right now. Whether it's another EP or a new album - there's a lot of new music coming. I think I have like 5 songs right now and I am always tweaking them. Just trying to get everything together and we'll see what it turns into.
What is one thing you are currently obsessed with?
I honestly like the 2 Chainz album. Their album is so good. Every single song on it is so good. The thing about 2 Chainz is that it's so funny. The things that he says I would just laugh out loud. I love that album, it makes you laugh.
