Opia is an indie electronic group consisting of Cole Citrenbaum, DJ STANFILL and colorthought. The band was created after meeting at Yale last year and dropping their successful debut record "Falling". They are now set for a huge 26 date tour supporting Whethan with their newest EP called "Faded". We got a chance to meet them at their performance at Regency Ballroom in San Francisco, CA this past weekend.
How did you get into music in the beginning?
DJ Stanfill: I did choir. I was a band nerd. I wasn't really taking music seriously, I sung a lot in the shower. One day I did a musical theater set and was like wow this is really fun. So that stuck with me and I got into composition, etc.
Who or what would you say is your biggest inspiration?
DJ Stanfill: Lyrically - Bob Dylan. He's my hero. It changes, a lot of jazz guys as well.
Describe to us your sound.
DJ Stanfill: The quick party line I give to people is: electro, rock, R&B. It's lyrically-driven and semi-anxious, semi-sexy.
What is the story behind your name?
DJ Stanfill: It's an obscure word that means that ambiguous intensity of eye contact.
How did you two meet each other?
DJ Stanfill: We went to Yale together. We kind of met in a sound studies class. Didn't really meet until after college though. Our producer, JACOB RESKE, he's the person who does all of our music. He's like the puppeteer. He brought us together and was like you both should do the live shows.
You’re set for a pretty big fall tour. How’s it been so far?
DJ Stanfill: It's been good - only day two.
Talk to us about your debut EP “Faded”.
DJ Stanfill: I think it's simultaneously having a clip planted in the audience we already had. We're trying to break into new territory. We're pushing for a more lyric-driven / rock direction.
Do you have any upcoming releases you can share with us about?
DJ Stanfill: We had two that we played in our set tonight. We cannot announce the release date yet but they're coming out soon.
If you could collaborate with anyone who would it be and why?
DJ Stanfill: Dead or alive? It would probably be Paul McCartney.
What is one thing you are currently obsessed with?
DJ Stanfill: Surfing. I grew up on beach town. I have a 6-10 raw. Aggressive rocker with a nice little swallow tail.
