Short for electro-funk, the electro genre was born out of funk and New York boogie music. It features drum machines like the TR-808 and other electronic sounds, as well as occasional vocals that are distorted with effects. Electro is noticeably more electronic than disco, and it uses less vocals than boogie.

Early hip-hop and electronic music like Afrika Bambaataa’s classic “Planet Rock” were huge influences on the electro style. Using the TR-808 and samples from Kraftwerk, the song was an underground hit that helped influence hip-hop and house music. As the ’80s continued, the electro charts became less mainstream and adopted harder percussion. Over the years, the electro sound has branched out into new genres like electroclash in Florida, and skweee in Scandanavia.

Today, electro house is a hugely popular style that combines the heavy sounds of electro with a driving kick drum. Many of the world’s biggest DJs play and produce electro house, including David Guetta, Hardwell, and Calvin Harris. The boundaries between today’s top electro and tech house are sometimes hard to define, but those who DJ electro may use synths and samples that reference the style’s origins.

Typically, an electro house mix will feature aggressive basslines with a 4/4 kick, as well as some melodic elements. Many fans point to French artist Mr. Oizo’s “Flat Beat” as an early version of the style, but it was Benny Benassi’s “Satisfaction” that made it a worldwide phenomenon. Some of today’s top electro house is given the name “big room”, because of the massive drops and steady beats that are designed for giant festivals. Here is the global DJ List for electro house.
