BEIJING BASS Biography
Language: EnglishBeijing Bass (aka Mel “Herbie” Kent) has performed on long term Dj contracts for international agency Juliana’s of London. Starting in 1989, Herbie spent 4 years in the Middle East and Europe before settling in Beijing, China.
During 1995-96 he was the resident at Beijing’s “Oriental number 1” club which had a daily crowd of between 3 and 3500 eager party goers. The music being played was Breakbeat and Prodigy style tunes while other Dj’s focused on hard house and progressive.
In 1999, Herbie was selected as the Dj to perform in front of a capacity crowd of 73,000 at Beijing’s workers stadium at the closing ceremony of the student Olympiad while China was in the process of bidding for the 2008 Olympics.
He says that “performing cuts while 10,000 people danced around dressed as bananas was the highlight of his career”.
Since 1999 he has performed at many diplomatic and charity events and is of the opinion that If more dj’s, foreign and local, in Beijing spent less time writing huge magazine articles about who they’ve supported and more time on making original music, we’d have a respectable scene.
These days Herbie spends most of his time in his home studio putting together tracks in a variety of styles.
